    Post PAC BELL DSL Sharing

    This is my first time trying to share a DSL
    connection and I must say I hope my last.
    I have cable at home and between the two
    cable with its slow downs once in a while
    is light-years from DSL as far as reliability
    AND speed is concerned. That being said I hope someone here can give me a heads up
    on sharing this DSL connection at work.

    I tried enabling internet sharing on the gateway machine witch of course works on every other machine I have ever setup BUT on this one when I enable connection sharing Windows wants to setup the NIC that’s connected to the modem with the internal
    IP of 192.168.0.1. I Have two NIC’s allready installed in this machine one for the modem and one for the Internal network.
    The one going to the modem is set to use DHCP and the internal NIC’s address is 192.168.0.1 this is the one I am enabling connection sharing on and when I do like I said W2k wants to set the other nic’s address to 192.168.0.1. Is this because of the PPPOE adapter ?
    Is that right? Is the nic going to the modem the one I need to setup connection sharing on ? or is it their cheesy software SBC. Anyway here's my Ipconfig

    PPPOE adapter 64.160.22.173
    255.255.255.0

    Default Gateway 64.160.22.175
    DHCP Server 1.1.1.1
    DNS Servers 206.13.30.12

    Netgear FA312 192.168.0.1
    (Internal Network) 255.255.255.0

    Intel pro 100 VE NIC
    (going to the modem)
    169.254.156.164 < Is there a problem with this IP ?
    255.255.0.0 and this subnet ?

    Any help will be appreciated
    Thanks…..

    I guess I can take a stab at this..
    The server machine will have a IP on both cards not on the PPPoE adapter. I would write out this FAQ but this is easierhttp://www.dslreports.com/faq/faq#156
    Anyway there is no problem with having two IP's on in in there as long as the PPPoE adapter can still be asigned one from the ISP...
    Excample:
    IP 1 is pppoe adapter
    IP 2 is the IP of the card with the DNS installed on it that is asigned by the ISP which your PPPoE adapter goes over
    IP 3 is the card that goes to the network(LAN)
    I suggest setting up all the IP's before hand.
    IP 4 will be the client

    1 = 10.0.0.3
    2 = 10.0.0.4
    3 = 10.0.0.5
    4 = 10.0.0.6

    10.0.0.1 is genneraly the Bridge/router(modem)
    This type of settup works good with proxy and ICS.
    No you don't have to use thou's IP address. Its just a reference
    http://www.avirt.com has a good PDF to use for networking as a reference there software aint to bad either...
    DSL really isn't that hard to share just a couple of extra IP address's...

    Thanks for the heads up. If i understand whats going on here is that IP 2, the nic that's coming from or going to the modem depending how you look at it is set to use DHCP which If I understand correctly it should be a static IP this is why I believe it's showing this IP address 169.254.156.164 subnet 255.255.0.0. Maybe I could trouble you for one more reply,

    Modem, IP 1 PPPoE adapter is set for DHCP and gets its address 64.xx.xx.xx and the DNS server address from DHCP server IP 2 Set it with a static IP say 192.168.0.1 and IP 3 (LAN) set it with a static IP say 192.168.0.2 and enable ICS through that connection.

    Thanks again.

    Ok most modems have there own internal IP for DSL. 10.0.0.1 fictisious

    The pppoe adapter is DHCP Lease.

    the network card to the modem is static 10.0.0.3 + ad the DNS IP's if it calls for a DNS name give it the same name as the machine.

    the next adapteris the one going to the LAN or client 10.0.0.4 + the DNS on this one.

    the next client could be 10.0.0.5

    Uhm ya thats right you could then add the Gatway IP to the clients to the LAN side card in the server.
    For the most part DNS won't change just the DHCP to the pppoe adapter
