    BF2 near...need opinions

Paid for BF2 a few months ago... i dont think my sys will run it but im hoping it will come close. I definately cant afford a new gaming rig so i need opinions as to what you think i can get away with... i want a new BFG 6800Ultra AGP, but i just cant seem to pull the trigger on a 450-500 hundred dollar vid card... so here is where y'all come in
this is my main rig (as soon as i get off muh ass and replace the fried hd)

    1x Win XP Pro
1x SOYO KT333 DragonUltra Platinum Edition
1x AMD Athlon XP 2400+ Thoroughbred 266MHz FSB Socket A Processor
    1x ASUS V9280TD/128MB Geforce4 Ti4200 128MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card
2x SAMSUNG 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Unbuffered Samsung Chipset System Memory DDR 333MHz True PC 2700 chip
1x CREATIVE Sound Blaster Audigy ES SB0162 6 (5.1) Channels PCI Interface Sound Card
2x Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JB 80GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive
    1x CDRW 40X12X48|LITE ON LTR40125 BLK
    1x DVD+/-RW LITEON SOHW-812S BLACK RT

I was going to acquire a gig stick o ram and a new vid card... something in the 3-4 hundred dollar range as its less terrible than the other... i still would like to get as close to the BFG 6800 ultra as i can get without going over 400 bux... prefer NVidia...

anyway anything you guys could come up with would be greatly appreciated!!!

You're in a hard place man....you need a better CPU, new mobo, more ram AND a new vid card to make something happen with BF2 imho. What is the highest CPU you can stick in there? I would try that....with more ram, 1gig optimal, and a 6800GT.

I agree here from what I've read anyway. BFG 6800 GT comes overclocked right out the box and will run about 300$ very good card right up to ultra speeds already.

um it will only take a 2600 266fsb... and i cant find one...not that it will help much...but yeah i was going to add a 1 gig stick to what i already have...2 gigs make kung foo strong.

    so a 6800 gt then?
think it will make a dent?

I'd say the vid card. I think he's OK with ram, he has a pair of 512 sticks = 1 gig. CPU wise, see what you can find out there...highest your mobo will take. But weak link in your chain right now is your vid card. Get the highest that your motherboard will take....slot wise.(check for compatiblity)

i got my 6800GT for $300 free shipping, ya just have to look around and wait for a sale, it overclocks to or above ultra speeds no problem.

maybe just wait to play the game to see how it really plays before spending any $$ on parts right now ??

Yup, i would also recommend seeing how it plays on lower end systems. I consider mine a "mid" range and am hoping to play it without to bad a kick in the graphics department. If not then im gonna have to bust out the cashe for a 6900gt....

what a shame that will be !

Serioulsy tho, wait and see how she does on what....if i remember correctly bf42, and bfv weren't exactly optimized when they hit....maybe after a couple patches it will run better on older systems....

you can probably pick up a 9800pro for about $100 from [h].

You should be good to go with a setup like that.

I was never very happy with my ti4200. The 9800pro is a huge leap up and is very cheap now.

Or, pick up a 9600xt for about 65-80 (again, used)

that SB is going to help a lot too by giving the cpu a break from the onboard crap.

I really think you're very close to being playable.

Sure, a stoked computer would be nice. We can't all afford it though.

you should be bf2 ready for less then $100, although you probably won't be using all the eye candy.

I'd push you to save your money. The x2's are going to be coming down in price soon and that'll be a worthy upgrade.

I think he was leaning more towards Nvidia instead of ATI which is the way I go also.

nvidia doesn't have anything worthwhile in the lower price range though. I would consider a 9800pro a fantastic bargain right now.
