    Basic Router Question

Ok. I have a new ISP. They changed my DSL modem. I used to have a static IP that was configured through router. I would set up my dlink router with the static IP, DNS, Subnet, and Gateway.

Now I have this Dare modem that automatically draws the static IP from "the line". How do I setup the router? Do I do the same thing and just input the new info, or is there a way to let the router collect the needed information automatically?

    Thanks for your help,

    Ric

Hard to tell without knowing more information.

Is the..."Dare" (never heard of that) modem also a router?

Or are you still using your old router?

    Is your new ISP PPPoE?

Even with static IP accounts from the ISP, I still have my routers setup as "Obtain automatically"...the PPPoE or DHCP server at the ISP hands out the appropriate IP based on the account. I've never had to fill in the WAN side of a router with static info.

    Thanks for the reply.

The "Dare" modem is not a router.

This is my new modem, supplied to me by the new ISP.

Yes, my new ISP is PPPoE. I have never worked with a hardware PPPoE before. I had software ones before, like Enternet300. When I get home, I will see if my Dlink Di-524 will automatically pick up the needed settings.

    Thanks,

Ahh Enternet...gotcha gotcha gotcha. When you setup the router on your rig....your computer will pickup a 192.168.XXX.XXX IP address from the routers DHCP service. Log onto your routers web admin, configure the router to use PPPoE as your authentication type...enter your user/pass for your ISP, and shortly you should see your router snag a WAN IP address. Good to go. You don't need PPPoE on your computer anymore...the routers firmware is what does it...maintaining a connection 24/7.
