lost 32-bit settings after running AVG...

After running Grisoft AVG my system settings were reset to 16-bit settings. When I try to reset, after restart nothing changes. Additionally, the background colors were reset to a scrambled pattern. The display settings only list the 16-bit options for color settings and screen area is locked at 640x480-resets are ignored upon reboot.

Did the AVG set off some defense mechanism of a virus or is there something loading in upper memory that is preventing any resets from being implemented ? Any other scenario description is appreciated. I'm running win98 and on a comcast connection. I have already run msconfig to minimize the pgms that run on startup.
