and he did survive! when he was drawn into the inlet his boots were ripped off and "FODed" the engine. his presence in the inlet track caused the engine to stall and essentially "backfired". very lucky considering how close he got to the compressor blades!

It wasn't his boots it was his crash helmet which fouled the engine. Broken shoulder, broken jaw as I recall.
