    no POST

yea having some problem with a gigabyte mobo 8S655FX ULTRA... when i power up the system it pretty much shows nothing on screen altho it sounds like it's booting properly (fan is working, monitor is powering up but blank etc etc).. the power led on the front of the box is dimmed and the RAM LED is off.. first thought was that it was something with the dimm's (kingston 400mhz)
but i checked them both in a friends mobo and it's working perfectly. Pretty much suppose it's something with the mobo or CPU i suppose. If its a CPU problem is the computer supposed to show anythign at bootup? i understand that i the system should be able to enter cmos with ram+mobo+video card is that right?? if no i can rule out the cpu without having to try it out elsewhere

p.s its a one year old system

a computer wont POST if the cpu is damaged

do all the usual stuff, unplug everything that isn't essential, make sure ram, cpu, vid card etc.. are seated correctly

make sure all cables that are needed are plugged in, atx, 12v if there, power to video card if needed, etc...

    jumper reset bios, try again

Nope, as long as it is the same slot and the motherboard supports that speed/make of processor, then plug it in and go....

That is how I troubleshot my first bad AMD t-bird 1.2ghz processor...You might be able to throw it under a magnifying glass with a bright light (like the kind that some use for knitting) and see if there is a crack on the chip, sucks when you see the crack, but kind of cool too (for the first time...never want to see it again)

Top two reasons I find for no post situations are

1 Dead motherboard.... Check for brown fuzz growing on the capacitors.
    2 weak PSU

yeah thanks, i suppose ill check out my cpu in a friends system, if it works, ill go buy a good PSU and if still no boot ill just pick up an new mobo to get things over and done with (i hope ;p) if his mobo doesnt support hyperthreading will it boot w/o HT support or will it not boot at all? (im sure he has a same slot 2.8ghz processor) i have a 2.6 p4 with H/T

are you sure the gfx card is working? thats the first thing i would change/try also for a weak psu, dissconnect everything you don't need to boot, cd roms 2nd hard drives, floppy and any additional cards but try the gfx card first
broken/incorrectly placed card = no picture
