    Problems installing XP Home

This is a fresh installation of a formatted hard drive. During installation from the WinXP cd-rom, after a few times where it asked me for certain .dll files and .sys files, which couldn't be located. The olny CD I had was my WinXP cd, so I had to skip them. When it completed that, it took me to the actual installation screen, when I got there, it says the file ASMS needs to be found on the WinXP Cd. Is there a specific directory I need to look for the file? (I only looked at E: ) Why do you think the files could be missing, (it is an official CD) Is there a reason why they can't be found or which directory is it supposed to be in.. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    a) Your CD is scratched

    b) Your CD drive is dirty

    Burke is most likely correct.

Get some CD scratch remover and clean the CD(least expensive), if the errors persist get a CDRom cleaner and try that.

Burke, Thanks for your prompt response. I'm going to ask you however, if a "cd cleaner" would be able to fix this? Because I can get a cd cleaner from someone. Also I am pretty sure the actual cd-rom drive is clean.
    Thanks again.

Also, will I need to know the specific directory when I clean the cd? Thanks.

    Sorry for all the posts..

Not sure what you mean here Jim.

CD scratch remover is a paste that you wipe on the CD and polish it.
Do the entire CD, because there's no way to tell where the directories are.

Kind of a funny question (unless I'm out of touch with reality here)

Note: By "entire CD" I mean the side that face down when it's inserted into the CDRom drive. No need to polish the "upside"

Sorry Norm, what I meant was when it said the missing file ASMS
was needed for WinXP to run, I manually went looking for it, would you suggest I just try reinstalling WinXP after I clean the CD? Thanks for prompt response.

Yep, after you polish the CD retry the install. Make sure you wipe off ALL the residue. Use a clean soft cotton cloth too, not paper towel or something that will scratch.

Jim, you might want to actually redo the install from scratch again. By that I mean allow the install to do a "clean" install and wipe out the first attempt's files.

I did a bit of searching and found another guy with the same problem ("ASMS needs to be found yada yada")

It may be a bad CDRom drive. He replaced his drive and all was well.

Microsoft also says it could be a badly burned CD

    Glad its all set.

Norm, hard to tell the cause. Crdom, scratch, ide cable, some cdroms can read through scratches better than others. Its a pain in the butt searchign the web to fix a missing file duriing install.
