    New Modem = No network!

Roadrunner came today and fixed our intermitten connection and after setting up a new modem I can no longer use my lynksys router to connect to the net with my network.

Is there a way I can configure my router to connect? I have a digital broadband RCA modem.

    TIA

Maybe clone the mac address of your nic in your router setup?

    did you reboot the router?

    try this,
    unplug power from router,
    reboot modem,(unplug power )
    power up modem again,
    after modem is online,
    plug router back in,(power up)
    reboot all pc's.

or go into the router and do a DHCP release and renew.

    Are you running xp?

    If so:

start>>>run>>>type in 'cmd' (without the '), hit return

type 'ipconfig /all' (again without the ') and hit return.

You should see something like this:

The number in red is the mac address to your network card. If you've got the updated firmware on your router, when you go into the configuration page of the router, under the setup tab, you'll see a tab for 'mac cloning'...put the above number in there, which makes the router look like an ordinary network card to your isp. Some isp's will only allow access to a specific mac address, so if your network card's been designated that mac address, you need to spoof it to get the router to work...

Hope this ^^^ is a little clearer than mud

Thanks Tony... I did that and no luck!

The only way to connect is directly through the modem.. 1 comp at a time..

the worst part is... they disconnected our cale at the pole... oh well, a years worth of free cable is gone. Time to purchase it now..lol

So are you able to connect different computers to the modem one at a time, but just not thru the router?

I don't think it's a mac address problem. If your ISP restricted access to a specific mac address only one PC would be able to connect. The one that was connected when they set it up. Sounds like it might be a router setup problem. Maybe DNS. Are you using static or dynamic Ip's on the PC's on the lan? Is the DHCP server function enabled in the router?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking when I asked about the multiple computers in my last post...

EA, I'm wondering if you've gotten yourself ahold of a bum router...have you tried updating the firmware on it?

That mac address restriction can realy mess with your head if you don't know about it. I was scratching my head for a while when I put my router in. Luckily for me a quick phone call to my ISP was all that was needed to fix it. Latter on I realized I could have cloned it. It was my first router and I was a newbe to networking.

EvilAngel, if you router has a reset button that would be my next option. when all else fails I power down everything including the cable modem. Power the modem up first, wait a while for it to connect and then power up the router. Give it a few minutes to do it's thing then power up the PC's one at a time. Personally I find I have a lot less problems when I use static Ip's. It's a little work to set it up but IMHO it's worth it.

EA, when they (RR) replaced your router, did they hook it up and test it?

When they did, did they connect it to your router? Or did they only connect it directly to your computer?

If they connected it to your router, it's not a MAC address issue. Because 1) It's a brand new modem, so the first device it boots up plugged into, it will memorize that MAC. So it had no prior bootup device to have that MAC in there already to cause you to want to retrain it, or clone it. And 2) Your router would still have the proper MAC in there if you cloaned it in the prior setup.

If they connected it to your computer, then you'll want to retrain the modem's current MAC setup because it has your computer NICs MAC in there, or take the quick "MAC cloning" approach. Power off modem for at least 30 minutes, this should empty out whatever MACs it has in the memory. Then while the router is powered on, plug in the modem to the WAN port of the router. It will learn and pickup the first MAC it detects. I prefer this method over MAC spoofing...wipe the board clean and start nice and fresh. MAC spoofing is more of a bandaid approach. Your router, as do most network devices like NICs, switches, and routers, has it's own unique MAC. They're sort of like a vehicle identification number...each and every device has a unique one. Rather than retrain your modem, you can have your router "lie" and instead of telling the modem its actual MAC, it will tell the modem whatever you entered in there...such as the MAC of whatever device was connected to your modem prior...that it might already have stored in memory.
