My question is about my line speed. I go to various speed testing sites and test it multiple times. I get generally around 384/289. My package says I should get between 350 - 2.3 meg. My main problem is I live like five blocks from the C/O office. Everything i've read says I should get close to the maximum speed. So I called my ISP and they told me my line was running at 1.1 meg. So what i'm wondering is how is the ISP testing my line and could there be something wrong with my computer to make it degrade down. I have a p3 500 128 megs of ram, windows ME, and a realtek 8029. Someone recommended me changing my NIC card to an intel or 3com what do you guys think? Thanks for any help you can offer.
for one, get a better NIC, Realtek 8029's suck, the 8139 is even a better coice. You may want to go with Intel (what I got) or 3com, they give the best performance. Two, try speedguide's tweaks. Three, ask your provider to check your lines for you and make sure your lines are properly installed. BTW, your ISP said 1.1Mbps is your speed , my upload speed is faster and my download is on adverage now 5 to 6Mbps . I would recommend cable for you if you got a good cable privider in your city cause DSL is building a bad reputation for itself. Plus with cable you do not have to deal with the stupid telco.
I live in a really small down in Indiana. We don't have cable access at all. We just got Dsl a couple months ago. My ISP is Bright.net (www.bright.net). I think i'll go out and get a new NIC. I'm getting another computer so I need one anyways. Thanks for you help.
