    Question Help tweaking my services?

Here's a list of what services I got running and I feel like it's bloated quite a bit. Any ideas of what I can and cannot get rid of.

First of all, that's not your list of Services. That's just what's running in the background viewed in Task Manager. To see what Services are enabled, go to Start > Run > services.msc

Besides, what you should disable all depends on what you want to have running. Things in your list that I would tell you to get rid of, you'd probably say "But I want that to run." I say strip everything down as far as you can go.

Go here for details on Service tweaking.

    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

A lot of what you have running in the screenshot can be disabled via the Startup tab in msconfig (Start > Run > msconfig). But do NOT use msconfig to disable Services. You need to do that from the services.msc I posted above.

You need to do a screenshot of the Startup tab AND of your Services.

For example, here is how I have my Services set up (your mileage may vary depending on what you need to run):

Thanks for the advice Burke. So from your reminder that these aren't services then I've already tweaked those and just made the mixup of thinking my programs running were services. DUH!!

So rule of thumb would be that all the processes running are obviously needed since my computer is set up the way I want it to and therefore all these processes need to be running?

People will forget what you said... and people will forget what you did... but people will never forget how you made them feel.

Again, that isn't your list of Services. It's what's currently running in the background in Task Manager.

If you load Start > Run > services.msc I'll bet you have a lot more running than you think.

All you have to do is re-enable it before running windows update

Just right before you run windows update set it to manual, then after the updates are done, set to disabled. Not even an extra reboot :P

    Disable:

    Automatic updates
    Background ITS
    Computer Browser
    Help and Support
    Logical Disk manager
    Upload Manager
    QoS
    Portable Media serial #
    performance logs and alerts

Anythign set to auto that you think you can delete, but are not sure of, just set to manual and see if the PC needs them.

The BlackViper guide gives a good list of details for each process, so check that out First!

Thanks alot guys. Always a great source of straighforward advice and help from SG members. It was CachemanXP I was running but I uninstalled it as per your advice. Probably a gimmick anyways I guess...just call me a tool for letting it stay on my system for so long.
