Toshiba bows out of cable modem biz

A high-profile cable partner has decided to suspend its cable modem business as unit prices continued to drop and margins continued to shrink.
Toshiba officials confirmed this week that the consumer electronics firm has shut down its cable modem product line, which includes a variety of stand-alone DOCSIS modems, cable modem gateways and multimedia terminal adapters (MTAs).
Toshiba recently notified MSO customers and retail partners of the decision, but the company will continue to support its embedded base of cable modem customers and support products through the life of their warranties, said Chris Harrington, vice president of strategy and business development for Toshiba America Information Systems.
"We're working with the MSOs to make sure we don't leave them high and dry as far as supply goes," added Chris Boring, marketing communications manager for Toshiba's network products division......
