Thread: Dual boot Win XP Pro and Win 2000.

  1. #1

Dual boot Win XP Pro and Win 2000.

    Which goes on first?

I have Partition Magic if that helps.

    EDIT!

I guess what I'm really asking is this: Being that XP is already on the system, will I be able to use PM to create a separate partition and put Win2K on it without having to follow the "latest OS last" rule?

Makes very little difference between NT based OS's- however if dual dooting w/98, best to install 98 first.
    Observe everything...focus on nothing..

I usually put win2k first. No need for partition magic. WinXP will happily go in the existing free space and even create a boot menu for you.

    How?

I never knew that XP Pro could do that? That's cool but where is it?

I thought you were talking about partitioning software.

I need to create multiple partitions for data.

It will not be a problem.

    Thanks for the advice.

put 2000 first. if you install 2000 after xp, xp cannto boot with 2000's older nt loader, so you need to boot into 2000 and replace them with xp's ntldr and ntdetect.com

Not true. There is a difference between the NTLDR and ntdetect.com files. Just make sure you put the latest of these files in the root of c:\. In other words, if you load XP on c: and 2k on d: then make sure you copy the these two files from the latest os(XP) to the root of c:\. Trust me on this one.

One last thing. Never install any DOS based system after an NT system, its bound for failure.
