Changing LAN from 192.168.1.xxx to 192.168.2.xxx

    Hey all,

I needed to change the IP's for my network because I am setting up a VPN and the other LAN has our same subnet and ip ranges...

Well, I created a new scope in DHCP and setup everything the exact same way as the old scope... Went ahead and changed the router to 192.168.2.200 instead of 1.200 Then i went into tcp/ip setting on the server and changed the static ip and gateway and all....

As far is i know i did everything i needed to do...

I can hit the router through a browser... i can surf the internet, i can see that DHCP is handing out the new IP's....

Roaming profiles are working.... Users folders are working...

    The problems are...

    1) I have a cable modem, and its running slow as ***** now! Just going to speedguide it took a minute or so... not a big deal though... atleast its working...

    2) BIG problem... When logging on, it flys through loading settings and all, but hangs on applying your personal settings, It hangs for atleast 2 minutes. Then once it does come up, it does not run my logon script i use to make network drives :-( I have no clue what this is not working.... when i log on the server as admin, it logs on fast, and the logon scripts from AD works, but it doesnt work from client machines!

    3) when i hit the router interface through a browser, it takes forever... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt...

I don't have a real good picture of your LAN setup but it sounds like it's bottlenecking somewhere in your network. Which would account for getting slow load times.

The reason it's hanging on applying personal settings is because it's DL'ing the roaming profiles from your AD and you've got the bottleneck. Admin is probably cached on the machine.

I'm curious as to why you set the routers to .200? What's your subnet mask? I'd tracert your traffic to see if there is a latency issue or if you are getting out through the vpn. What router are you using?

The router being at .200 was my boss, not me... I always set them up to .1, but my boss has the server on .1 BTW, its a little linksys.

Strange thing, when i set the dhcp back to the old scope, and change the tcp/ip properties of the server back, and reset the router's ip, everything zooms along perfectly, AD logon scripts work, everything is a'ok...

but when i change it back to the 192.168.2.xxx, instead of the 192.168.1.xxx, it freaks back out and not much works...

    BTW, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

Background on LAN: 1 main ml370 w2k3 server, 1 application proliant 1600 w2k3 server, 15-20 clients, all plugged into a 24 port netgear switch. Internet connection is a cable modem plugged into a linksys router...

you running your own dns? you have any A host records set staically? try clearing cachse, scavange stale records and update zone data. DNS can cause a lot of issues. try that. net you should try going to the machines and doing an ipconfig /registerdns.

I agree...look at DNS properties. You should have DHCP handing out the servers IP address to the clients as their DNS server.

Event viewer on the server..take a peek.

Where in the event viewer should I be looking for this kind of problem?

The problem is.. I can hit the linksys router through a browser just fine at times.... and 10 min later, I can't see hit it at all, and the internet will be down as well... its wierd.... Sometimes its working, sometimes its not...

I have tried all other comments, the scavenge, and clear cache, and registerdns, etc... but nothing seems to work...

    For scavenge I get:
The DNS server has completed a scavenging cycle but no nodes were visited. Possible causes of this condition include:
    1) No zones are configured for scavenging by this server.
    2) A scavenging cycle was performed within the last 60 minutes.
    3) An error occurred during scavenging.

Anything else you guys can think of?
