SATA can transmit 150mb/sec and IDE 66mb or so, isnt the peak hard drive performance like 43 mbs in everyday computing? Only benefit i can see from SATA over IDE is a slightly more convenient cable with a cost. Am I missing something here?

the raptor has 10k rpm, faster seek times and faster load times.
scsi still destroys both of them though.
With the new sata drives such as raptors from western digital, not only are tranfer rates higher, but seek times are much lower due to the higher spindle speed. If you run SATA RAID you are going to really feel it. SATA definitely beats IDE .. its just up to you whether it is worth the price premium (which is shrinking constantly)

and right now there's no point in it unless you're going high end like a raptor..the wd SE's still rock
lets make something else clear, 150 MB/s is peak theoretical..and 133 MB/s is the same you will not hit either, not even burst. also the speed of the interface is limited by implementation..for example.. u put a sata controller on a 33 MHz, 32 bit PCI bus and you're limited to 133MB/s MAX in theory..but that's shared w/ a lot of other devices too..

I love my Raptors they RAID nice. I may go Serial SCSI next year.
for Serial ATA i would wait for the next generation (rate at 300 mb/sec) for it to be worthwhile and the price comes down a bit (not that its too much of difference between IDE and SATA drives)!

Most people won't notice much difference between IDE and SATA...unless you get a 10,000 RPM drive. The seek times are nearly half of the 7200 RPM SATA and comparable IDE drives.
Having tried the Raptor drives in RAID-0 I can safely say it nukes IDE RAID-0. But SCSI is still king in that arena.
