Question problems connecting with a static IP address

I just purchassed a netgear wireless router with 4 ports. MR814 I think it is. My ISP is providing me with a static IP address. Before I connected my lap top directly to the c/modem and all is fine.

But when place the router between my laptop and the c/modem nothing works. I configed the router with the static IP and the laptop was well . My question is this.
Do I set the static IP address in the router and the compter,?

When the router is placed between the laptop and the cable modem, you will need to:

    1. Configure the router (that includes assigning that static IP to it).
    2. Reboot the cable modem (so it picks up the MAC address of the router, rather than your laptop's NIC), wait for it to come up, then reboot the router as well.

After that, your laptop's IP (and IPs of other local PCS) will be internal, whether it's static or not depends on how you configure the router, but either way it's going to be some other private IP address. If you enable DHCP in the router, network clients should be able to "Obtain IP automatically" from the router.
Linux is user friendly, it's just picky about its friends...
