Simile - comparing two unlike things using the word like or as

Metaphor - comparing two unlike things that have something in common.

those are the definitions...however I cant tell by the context is which that phrase was said, whether or not its a simile or not.

met·a·phor : A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison, as in “a sea of troubles” or “All the world's a stage”

It's a lyric from a song. (see bold type)

    In The End
SUNG BY - Linkin Park -

    [It starts with]
    One thing / I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind / I designed this rhyme
    To explain in due time
    All I know
    time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings

Watch it count down to the end of the day
    The clock ticks life away
    It's so unreal
    Didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on / but didn't even know
    Wasted it all just to
    Watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I tried
    so hard
    One thing / I don't know why
Doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind / I designed this rhyme
    To explain in due time
    I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I'm surprised it got so [far]
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
    In the end
You kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I
    I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter
    I had to fall
    And lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter
I put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
    And for all this
There's only one thing you should know

    and a metaphor.

Good Lord...now people are using quotes from crappy rock bands to try and demonstrate similes and metaphors?

The education system is truly in shambles. Shoot us all now.

    Thank you.

It's neither. There is no comparison made in that sentence. It's just saying That time is flying by and the pendulum is swinging at the same time. Not comparing time flying by to a pendulum swinging. That doesn't make any sense.
    Respect it.

    Time to find another XSeaNX.

Someone contact Norm. The answer has to be in DOS somewhere.

Maybe you could try one of these??

Or, you could read the info here that is easier to understand than DOS.

I'd say its NOT a similie because it's basically saying "watch it fly by WHILE the pendulum swings"

if it said "watch it fly by like a pendulum swings" then it would be a similie

'like' can be used in a similie as well as 'as'
