Alright. I have high speed cable with Charter. For about a week now, I've had from 4 kb/s to 10 kb/s download speed. Youtube videos appear to load, but then seemingly freeze. Browsing is fine. I play CounterStrike the vidya game online, and my ping is fine, it stays around fifty or so.

I tried calling Charter, and they did the usual, resetting the modem, asking about antivirus, etc... he concluded by telling me that my modem was a 3 meg and I was getting 5 meg internet, so that must be the problem, and told me I could go to the local Charter store to pick up a 10 meg modem and they would increase my speed to 10 megs.

I'm not really too sure that that is actually the problem at all... and believe it not to be. I've been trying to fix this for a minute, cleaning out all malware I can find, etc... but to no avail so far. Any suggestions?

First of all, my apologies if this is in the wrong section.

My question lies in the following situation:

I'm a college student, using provided dorm room internet connecting through an ethernet drop jack. Prior to using this, I was only used to using basic adsl? the type that you recieve a modem that connects to a standard phone jack, then that in turn connects to your computer. It was fairly low end and only got about 300 Kbps in terms of average download speed.

Now the college provided internet would be a big step up if it wasn't always so bogged down. So if you want to use it during any time that isnt between 3:00am-5:00am you'll feel like you're on 56k. Because of this I'd prefer the lower end 300Kbps if only for its reliability.

Is it even possible to get that type of dsl service since there's no standard phone line, would it just eliminate the need for the modem, or with only the ethernet drop jack there would I be stuck with the provided internet? And if it is possible to get it to private service, would it be slowed down by the college network in anyway?

I have a Vista machine wired (up to date w/ service packs)
I have recently got the internet(rogers) Motorolla modem, tp-link router

I have it set up, wireless works great. It will not work though with my wired vista machine. It will not retrieve an ip address.

I have tried new cables, tried reseting router, restarting computer.. ect. To no avail.

I took it to my local shop, plug it into their network , works great.

Any suggestions as to what step to take next. Im open to any suggestions.

PS. I have also tried a different NIC, no diffrence. Also new drivers for the NIC installed, no difference. I have tried disabling IP6v.

Thank you for your time

Hey Guys & Gals,

I just called up my ISP and signed up for their 100mbps internet service over the new Docsis 3.0 system. They came to drop off the new modem yesterday. It connects up fine, and the light shows blue on the motorola modem showing a bonded downlink which should theoretically give me my 100mbps of bandwidth. Unfortunately, the speeds are only reading about 35mbps though the ISP's speedtest, speedtest.net, bandwidthplace.com, testmy.net, while doing multiple linux downloads, using newsgroups, etc. I have tested the thing to hell, it isnt going any faster.

The cable connection into the house is only split once in the basement by a powered motorola splitter/amplifier. I tried also hooking a 3db attenuator on the modem's end and no change in speed. Out of curiousity, I decided this morning to unhook the main cable connection into the house from the splitter, and stick it right into the back of the modem. To my suprise, the speedtests were instantly showing 100+ mbps!!!
After this, I tried changing out the splitter for a different one, and had the same issue with it only going up to 35mbps. for some reason, it just seems that if the main service entry is split at all by any type of splitter, the connection for the internet just goes to sh*t.

I called my ISP and they say that the levels are all where they should be etc etc, and they are suggesting that my computer is the problem.
I am a certified computer tech, as well as a network tech. I have already ruled out the computer, switches, routers, or any other networking gear as a possible cause to this problem. It simply seems to be something to do with the cable service into the house.

Does anyone have any similar experiences, or some ideas I could try to resolve the issue? I am paying quite a bit of money for this, and I want to get the speed I am paying for.

Thanks
John

Details:
Motorola SB6120 is the modem
ISP is Shaw Communications - Highest tier @ 100mbps down/5mbps up
Computers I have tried are:
Laptop: core2duo 2.6ghz
Server: dual socket XEON-Quadcore @ 2.8ghz - 32GB ram
Media Center: AMD 6400+
Same results on each computer, through router, and direct.

ok guys here is a funny one. I had a Motorola modem and in june my upload went from 5+Mbps to about .4Mbps. I had to wait till July to get a tech to come out because of all the people in the office and I will not wait in line for hours :(. they came out and tried to blame everything but the cat for the problems. I almost had to threaten the tech to swap modems but he finally did it my way and the issue was fixed. Now here about maybe a week ago I noticed the same thing again. This time I have a ARRIS TM602G/CT it's a Internet/digital phone modem. I think they call it a emta or something like that. The Motorola was that type of modem also. I am getting the same response from the techs. They see nothing wrong with anything. I don't know exactly how they see the stuff, but the tech said it looked fine. I had them tell me that in june also. Is there anything I can look at or do to see for sure if the upload side has gone kaput again??( I have done all the re-boots,File removal, power cycles, etc.. etc.. nothing has changed)
I am also thinking of buying my own modem since they are raising my rent to 5 a month now. is the SB6120 a modem I can use with the phone and internet like the way I have this one set??

I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL, and get internet from Comcast. Plugged straight into the modem I get about 20mbps speed, going through the router ranges from about 1-2mbps. This is true for both wired and wireless connections.
The problem I've been having is that at around 7pm - 12 am'ish my ping spikes anywhere between 64 ms - 1800 ms where the game is completely unplayable.

Here is the information you'll be needing, and if you can give me a bit of clarity on my situation it would be much appreciated. As you may have noticed I've been trying to do some tweaking on my own please do call me a newb  .
I have an adsl connection. And I have been having an annoying problem. My internet connection stops receiving at random times for around a minute or half. And then it starts receiving again. And the cycle goes on.
This is especially annoying because I play counter strike online and this brief stop is enough to either time me out of the game or show a "Warning: Connection Problem" error.

Please help me out guys.

Hello!
A while ago I tried to use the webcam on my iMac with aMsn. It did not seem to work and I got a message that I was behind a firewall. Anyway, I checked out my router by typing it's IP into my web browser. After I had opened the appropriate ports through what was called "port forwarding", my webcam worked fine. While I was on my routers admin page I noticed that the time and date was completely wrong, it said the year was 2004 etc. so I changed it to todays date.
Now, the next day after I had made those changes I sometimes found myself losing my internet connection. It can happen at any time and the only way to solve it seem to be to reboot my computer and my router. After I've done that I seem to be able to connect to the internet for a while until it happens again..
This seem to affect every computer in the house. this has been going on for a while.. Anyone who might have a clue what's wrong?
