Around here, there are plenty of down sides, such as being downwind from the cattle yards when the winds get really strong. Or heat being triple digit unbearable for long stretches during the summer. But there are plenty of up sides as well. The weather can be absolutely amazing to watch at times, and, as a photographer, the opportunities to capture mother nature at her finest abound. Like this little shot here, it was from a storm that was blowing in from the north. Plenty of open sky to the north of our place to be able to get a wide shot of the lightning hitting the ground.

I've updated some of the SG Network tools to ajax processing and generally streamlined the background code. Check out the DSL distance/speed calculator, The IP locator, and the Hash Generator if you wonder whether your password was part of the LinkedIn leaked passwords fiasco !

We've also added 400+ new vulnerabilities to the ports database in the past couple of months. Combined with updating the routers database with all the newest devices, we've been keeping busy!

This past week I had the fortunate pleasure of being able to shoot some pictures (well, a lot of pictures, actually) of three key aircraft from the WWII era: the B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 Liberator, and the P-51 Mustang. All three are cared for by the Collings Foundation, and they tour them every year in order to raise money for the upkeep of these amazing aircraft. In the just under two hours I spent around them on Monday, I shot in the neighborhood of around 1100 pictures, completely filling a 16gb card, and starting on an 8gb card, and completely drained one of the camera batteries I had. But I was able to get some really nice shots of the warbirds, in addition to some photos of other aircraft that were in the area at the time...

Last weekend for the Superbowl in Indy, my wife, two kids, son-in-law, and granddaughter all poured into my daughter's minivan and drove up to Indiana to enjoy all the festivities. We stayed at my mother-in-law's place, and spent Saturday downtown and watched the Superbowl from the house on Sunday. Had a great time, and took lots and lots of pictures :)

This was about as close as we could really get to the stadium. Security around Lucas Oil was very tight, and we were a little disappointed that we couldn't shop at the pro shop inside the stadium.

The zip line that they had set up along Capitol Avenue. You had to get downtown around 5 am just to get in line for it, and the tickets were usually sold out before 8 am.

The Mariott hotel where, I believe, the Giants stayed during their time in Indy. Pretty impressive to see an entire building such as this decorated the way it was.

A view of Lucas Oil Stadium from the top of the Soldier's and Sailors Monument at the center of town. Three hundred and twenty steps up. Kicked my butt - but so worth the view.

It's too bad they weren't flying in formation when they flew over...that would have made for some cool shots :) They were situated about two minutes apart.

What was really cool is that we live about 15 miles from the airport as the crow flies. I could watch the jets fly all the way in, and hear the engines kick in when they took off after landing.

My visits to SG have been woefully scant in recent months, giving how much I care for those here. It is a less than subtle reminder of changes of interest, whether it be the flavor 15 seconds on the web or something a bit more epiphanal. Certainly, those of us who pulled ourselves away from the keyboard long enough to engage in quasi-connubial activities to procreate will note the dearth of casual "me" time. Raising my three children and my stepson have brought a tiring but in moments unfathomable joy.
Still, left to toil in maudlin recollection, we are left to yearn for the old times and friends. This is a post I placed on Facebook a short time ago.

Friendship is temporal. It is about people, in a time and a place brought together by a circumstance.
Facebook can be a wonderful tool for reconnection. It can also serve as a reminder that people do change. Friends from the past are sometimes best remembered with the hazy eyes of nostalgia.

It came about from a few "zombie friendships", people whose experiences left them unrecognizable, hence in need of a burial. It id profoundly sad to have memories of a cherished soul sullied by what they have become. Like corporeal death, spiritual absence leaves nothing but fond thoughts and painful longing.

As many of you probably know, I'm big into photography and aviation. I'm third generation aviation - my grandfather on my mom's side was a Corsair pilot during WWII, my grandfather on my dad's side had his hand in Army aviation from the late 50's going forward. My father began his aviation career as a Huey pilot in Vietnam in '69-'70, and soon went to work for Bell Helicopter as a test pilot up until he retired last year. And then with me, I joined the Navy in 1988 as an aviation electronics technician, flew around 2000 hours on the Boeing E-6A Mercury aircraft, and now currently work as a V-22 electrical assembler. I also spent a year on the assembly line for the latest version of the Huey, the UH-1Y.

In any case, I've always had a fascination for aviation. I feel like a kid at Christmas every time I fly, and will go out of my way to see an aircraft when I find out an unusual one is flying in locally. I love to take photographs of aircraft when I can, and I've been amassing a collection on both flickr and flightaware websites. Feel free to click on the links to take a look at my images.

Last fall, I was able to fly on an aircraft that I had dreamed about flying on for years, the B-17 Flying Fortress. My flight took place on the Liberty Belle, a B-17G that entered service right at the end of WWII and did not see any combat action, but managed to persevere through being used as a test bed for Pratt & Whitney, and being sliced in half by a tornado in the 70s. It had been restored by the Liberty Belle Foundation, of which 12 years were expended to make her fly. Unfortunately, she was lost last month when she made an emergency landing in a farm field in Illinois and an engine fire went uncontrolled and consumed her. She was one of only about a dozen B-17s that still fly, and to lose her is a huge blow to aviation history.

In addition to having been able to fly on a B-17, I would like to soon be able to fly on a number of other vintage warbirds, including the B-29 Superfortress, the B-25 Mitchell, and a Vietnam era UH-1 Huey. These are on the top of my list right now. To be able to fly on these aircraft and to shoot pictures while doing it is a feeling that I can't ever get enough of.

Tonight the world was informed that osama bin laden had finally met his fate at the hands of a small U.S. force comprised of CIA operatives and Seal Team 6. His body is currently in U.S. custody, and I would imagine that when everything is said and done, the remains will be obliterated to ensure no one will ever be able to use his burial as a shrine of some sort. The only thing that will be left of him will be the knowledge that he can no longer hurt anyone ever again.

The events of 9/11 are forever etched into our collective memory, and this measure of closure will never complete ease the suffering of those directly affected by what happened that September morning, but we now have an opportunity to move forward with a better, brighter future, one with a diminished terrorist threat. My hope? That the intelligence community presses forward and takes out the rest of bin laden's organization. We found bin laden, we can find the rest.
