I just bought a new cable modem (LinkSys BEFCMU10 ver.2) and it says it's DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1 Upgradeable. Can I actually upgrade this or is this something done by the cable company? Basically, is it a software patch or some kind of signal the cable ppl send? I recently moved and the cable guy comes later this week. When I asked what type of modem to purchase (or not purchase) they say any...as long as it was DOCSIS 1.1. I hooked everything up last night and according to the modem I got signal. It takes me to the company login page, so it seems it works I just have to wait for them to set me up. I browsed the modem 192.168.100.1 (i think that's it, i'm at work, heh) and it said DOCSIS 1.0.

word.

It will work fine. Your ISP will (as long as they support this model) upgrade it by uploading new firmware to it...

chpalmer is correct. The cable company will upgrade when they are ready to implement DOCSIS 1.1 ... in a year or so. DOCSIS 1.1 allows for more efficient use of the bandwidth, tiered services (that is, different speed services) and VoIP (Voice over IP ... which will improve the reliability of the local telephone service offered by the cable company).

You can check to see if your modem is DOCSIS 1.1 Certified at http://www.cablelabs.com/certqual/whoiscertified.html. Linksys BEFCMU10 ver.2 was D1.1 certified on 9/24/02. There's also a short powerpoint presentation on DOCSIS at http://www.cablelabs.com. Hope this helps unravel the DOCSIS mystery.
