Run all Windows Updates so the OS is running healthier

Latest NIC drivers

How are you connected to the broadband...direct, software sharing, or a router? Routers generally perform better than software sharing like ICS or some other proxy.

Turn off anti-virus real time protection only when playing. Shut down other things you may have running in the system tray, like IM programs.

Run Ad Aware or Pest Patrol to get rid of spyware that's always sending/receiving data while online.

Good quality patch cables from your NIC to router/broadband modem? Not plopped over stuff that gives off strong EMI, also hub/router/modem away from stuff that gives off EMI. I've seen some peeps put their equipment right on something bad like their subwoofer....not good (think of the large magnet inside of that)

Broadband wiring coming into the house...good clean connections? Or loosely out in the open, exposed to moisture. Every place I've lived in...internet performance is important to me, and I've always had the phone company run in fresh brand spanking new phone lines from the street...even back in the dial up days. Was worth it. Same with my house now...ran CAT3 from the street to my phone block...CAT6 bringing the DSL in (yeah it's overkill...but no problems either)

Now that above covers just about all you can do on your end.....if that's all good and inplace....and you still have issues....if you have DSL, call and scream enough, they can check you connection on their end....sometimes that can help. Sometimes there's a web connection in a box on your street. But it's tough. Cable...well, you have to deal with sharing your connection with others on your node...you're stuck there...just one of the things about cable.

The last thing you can do...try another ISP...as the one you may be using is probably a bit oversubscribed. With cable, you're usually stuck...only one available in your area. But with DSL...there's usually a lot of ISP's you can choose from...and I've always said that the local phone company generally is far from being a high performance ISP...they generally were bad back in the dial up days...what makes people thing they'll do DSL well? I pay twice the amount for my DSL to get it from a really good ISP...and man is it worth it, I blow away my buddies with phone company DSL in online gaming with pings.
