Hi,

I got OOL a few days ago because one of my friend has it and it's good. His connection is really fast. He is able to get 9999kb/s on speed test like speakeasy.net. But for some reason I am only able to get an avg speed of 5412 kb/s from speakeasy and from the OOL speed meter I get around 6400. The fastest that I have been able to go is 7000 + kb/s. I have been able to reach this speed because of the different tweaks that I have applied. When, I got connected at first, I got 4800kb/s then 5500kb/s and now 6400 + kb/s--because of the tweaks--.

I'm using Windows XP Professional
with Motorola SURFboard 4200

Another thing that might be helpfull to know:
My NIC it's an 3Com EtherLink III ISA (3C509/3C509b) in Legacy mode. But since it's an old NIC win-xp doesn't support it. The only way that I got it to work it's by using an old driver and manually setting it up.

Also, my friend is in a town next to me which I think has less OOL subscribers. Another reason why I think, my connection it's slower.

Here is my test result:

TCP options string = 020405b40103030101010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 128480
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 5139.2 kbps (642.4 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2055.68 kbps (256.96 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 111 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Welcome to Speedguide NJman:D, first download CableNut form my signature and try the following settings:

DefaultReceiveWindow = 921600
DefaultSendWindow = 128000
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 100
InitialMediumBufferCount = 240
InitialSmallBufferCount = 320
LargeBufferSize = 81920
MaxFastTransmit = 64000
MediumBufferSize = 15040
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 1280
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 4096
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitsOnReceive = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 64240
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 2
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1460
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1460
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 64240
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10
DefaultTTL = 64
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 92

Also do the following:

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there except TCP/IP Internet Protocol.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85224)).

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot (http://beam.to/spybotsd), anything checked in red is spyware and safe to remove.

I try the tweaks you gave me and my pc it's crawling. it went from 6+mb/s to 3500+kb/s. I try to restore my registery and I couldnt because somethings were not writen correctly. What can I do to go back to my old settings?. Can I click "delete cablenut tweaks" and then use "DR tcp" and then just put 64240 as my tcpwindowsize? What can I do to go back to my old settings?

ps
This is what I get for beeing greedy.

Your not being greedy, did you reboot to take effect? Try changing GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize & TcpWindowSize to 128480 and set Tcp1323Opts to 1 (then it's back like you had it except with the other CableNut settings) see if that helps any.:) :D

Ok let me try to use those new settings. Another thing, if I delete the cablenut tweaks and just leave tcpwindowsize and tpc1323 the way they are....will I go back to my original setting. I'm asking because I am afraid the those extra setting might influence my performance in a bad way.

They shouldn't hurt your connection, they have helped many people. If you delete all the CableNut tweaks and save to registry and reboot then you are back to defaults. Let me know what worked best.:) ;)

I inputed the new setting you gave me and it was about the same. Then I tried deleting cablenuts tweaks and saving registery (using cablenuts). Now, my speed is way down....1mb/s. What can I do?

Is there a way that I could get the setting from my friend pc and then input them to mine. As I told you he's is faster. Eventhough, he did not do any special setting.

I know put 64240 in tcpwindowsize(only that and only there) an it went up to 3mb/s.

Just find out your friends TCP/IP settings, it doesn't mean you will get the same speed though. I would suggest the original settings I suggested, what do you have your NIC duplex mode set to?:)

I can't tell. I went to local area connection>properties>configure>advance
and in properties I see: Maximum transmits and in value:I have Not present, checked ( But the values range from 2-50). I don't know if the fact the my NIC is old (read what I previously told you in my first post about my NIC) has something to do with it.

Would you like to take a look at my pc ( Using remote assistance). Do you have IM so that I can send you and email w/ the necessary info.? --if you would like to do that--

You know I overlooked the fact that your NIC was so old and ISA, ISA are the slowest slots on your pc. Before doing anything else I would suggest buying a new NIC, they are very inexspensive and I'm sure it would increase your bandwidth.:) ;)

Hey, Good news. Lastnight I don't know what I did but my speed is back. I'm running at 7mb/s. I open cablenuts and the only setting that I have are tpcwindowsize=128480 and tcp13230=1.
Oh, I order a realtek 8139D for $6 shipping included. I guess, I don't need it anymore but since it's cheap I'll probably won't cancel the order. When I get it I'm going to try it, to see if I gain the other 3mb/s with it. :-)

Ok take care.

Sorry, but OOL people are annoying. :D

I only get 1.5 mb with my connection at maximum speed.

Stop rubbing it in my face!!:D :)
