View Full Version : wd se in raid0 benchmarks
here you go brent.

My Sandra is slower then yours, mine is at 25MB/sec while yours is at 38MB/sec, its important to note though that when i first setup the RAID0 array witha clean instal of XP it was at 45MB/sec in sandra
but since sandra isn't too reliable as a hdd benchmark i guess that can be taken with a grain of salt
In HDTach our results match, only a meg or 2 part! So that's good news.
But the part that concerns me, and the part i think that matters a lot here, is the Minimum speed attained, mine dips down to 3.5MB/sec and yours dips down to 3.7MB/sec
And the Seqential read is all over the chart, up and down spikes, its very erratic.
I think this is why it seems so much slower then it should be. I've done everything I can think of but i just can't smooth it out more. But I just can't do it, i wonder if anything can be done at all.

both of you, please read your PMs
thank you
I moved my swap file to another drive...
try that and see if it helps.

No other drive to move it to heheeh
but that didn't seem to help you, your minimum is 3.7MB/sec and your sequential is all over the chart just like mine... its not as smooth as it should be :( too erratic

Thanks both of you

how is this?
Epox 8kha+ (kt266a)
XP 1800+
512 generic ddr ram
WD 80 gig 7200 RPM 2mb ata/100
good? bad?
the only reason I can think of is a service that's running, causing the dip. I have seen HDtach scores with our setup that didnt have the bumps. Although, what the heck is this. Just noticed it:

might be time for me to throw the ghost image back on
that AINT normal.

that's EXCELLANT
very healthy!!
wow. reaffirms my belief that WD rock!
see, look at TEH WIN's sequential read, it's much more smooth then ours
also his minimum speed is 17MB/sec
now, he doesn't have an IDE RAID setup, whereas we do
so maybe IDE RAID is just THAT bad, heh
i want SCSI RAID :D
I bet a hardware raid setup wouldnt be so grouchy.
I have some time at work tonight, I'll do some serious research tonight brent and discover our problem.
This is my 2 80gig WDSE RAID 0 on HighPoint 374 controller.I don't have HDTACH to bench cause it ain't worth $50 just for a benching program.

so mine is good you're telling me//???/????/?????
:D :D
fishy, is that a hardware or software controller... cause those speeds are jaw-droppping!!!
win, those speeds are amazing for an ide drive. I am really impressed.
brent, I have run these drives by themselves. I wanted to in fact. The speed difference was so great, I had to go back. I just couldnt live with it.

The controller built onto the MOBO
here is the difference between raid-0 and a single drive
raid-0...............

single drive...........

i have seen better scores than mine for sure.
zoinks snake... are those your scores. never tried that benchmark before.
yes, my scores, like i said i have seen better
this is raid-0......

zooner, you can get ATTO here (http://home.tampabay.rr.com/snakepit/tools/benchmark%20tools/ATTO/)
http://webpages.charter.net/mlanter/ATTO.jpg
wtf (f mean fudge here, of course) are you using for a controller snake?
and :) fishy, you just go away. unless I read wrong, that's a serial raid setup you're using. only nerds use a serial raid setup.
http://www.tomandjodi.com/pics/scream.jpg
for reference my setup
Abit BD7-II RAID
P4 2.4B
512MB DDR
2 80GB WD SE drives in RAID 0 on the High Point 372 controller on the mobo
WinXP
EPOX 8k5a3+ MOBO
XP1600
No Serial ATA on this board. Just 2 80gig WDSE
Brent ,
1=Install the latest driver for your HighPoint.
2=Use a 16k stripe and 16k clusters.
hmm... sorry fishy. looked up your controller and it said was the new serial revision. Must have misread or was just plain wrong info.
Do you do anything special fish? It cant just be the controller, cause brent uses the same as you. Plus, I use a promise... not the same.
Perhaps brent and I use an onboard and you're useing a pci based controller card?
----------------------------------
I cant do 16/16 cause I have a promise lite. not worth it to mod a mobo.

on board high point, see sig. not sure what raid BIOS i am using, but running one of george breeze's abit latency patches.
it really makes a big difference which raid bios and drivers i use on this board.

just to add make sure you use the proper driver for your raid BIOS, it seemed to make a big difference to my setup.
BTW fish59, nice scores :)

1.) I have always kept my system up to date software/firmware/bios wise.. it has the latest mobo bios, latest high piont bios, latest high point drivers, latest intel chipset drivers, service pak 1 for xp etc... etc... etc..
2.) I used the default settings the high point controller recommended when i made the array
