View Full Version : upgrading to 768megs from 512?
Hi!
i do a lot of video encoding, sometimes it seems like 24/7. anyways, I believe I could use some more ram. I was thinking of upgrading to 1024 from 512, but it's beyond my budget right now. I am considering dual DDR when it comes out(however you say it.) I assume the prices might be differant then.
anyways, since I feel that 1024 is beyond me I was considering some cheaper 256. Nothing TOO cheap, perhaps PNY. It's on sale this coming week for $50 for a pc2100 256meg at circuit city.
would I really see any improvement going up to 768? i'm not interested so much in speed as I am reliablity.
if you are going to go with inexpensive RAM and are looking for reliability, just run the memory timings at a less aggressive setting. 2.5-3-3 or something along those lines. or just let your system BIOS configure the settings automatically (from the SPD). just keep in mind that expensive/lifetime warrantee memory is by it's very nature more reliable. the less you spend, the more of a chance you will be taking.
will you see an improvement? mmmmmm, probably. since your primary system draw will be for video encoding/decoding i would say you will. may not be a night and day difference, but i am sure you will notice. and besides..... memory is one of those things where every little bit helps.

Ack, not PNY, stick with at least a decent brand...Crucial is only 60- something bucks for a 256 stick.
For video editing, yes it will help...a gig or even more really helps, especially if you work with some really large files. Adding another 256 to your 512 will surely help.
You know what will tremendously help if you start getting serious about video editing...going to a WD SE hard drive with the 8 megs cache....difference will be HUGE....peeps who work with really large files benefit the most from those drives.
I have two 80gig wd se's running in raid0... so i'm covered there.
I might just wait and save up for another corsair3000 512stick.

Hey, i got the same hard drives in RAID 0 as well
can i ask a favor? I take it you do a lot of hard work on those drives and all and I was wondering what your Sandra and HDTach score is for those drives in RAID 0?
Would you mind running a sandra hdd bench and then an hdtach hdd bench and letting me know the results you get?
I'm trying to compre my setup with other peoples because I think i'm slower then i should be on the minimum mb/s througput....
i'll have to agree w/ YOSC. PNY has gone down hill lately and their memory is POS if i u ask me. i'd rather have generic.

Whooomph...never used them in the past, always junk. Tiger Catalog built themselves with PNY memory....LOL
Kingston too.

thank you very much...
I'm very glad I asked first. Really thinking about it, everything else in my machine is top notch. i figure I'll pair that corsair3000 with a twin. It'll just have to wait a lil bit.

LOL...I know what you mean. My current GF3 64 DDR graphics card is getting a bit long in the tooth....and I'm getting impatient waiting for nVidia's NV30 to come out.....but I can't justify spending 160 or so bucks on a GF4ti4200 to hold me over til the NV30 comes out. I just can't justify spending money on a card that will last me only 3 months.
Regarding your budget...seriously, head on over to www.crucial.com and get it there. Crucial is darn good memory, for great prices. Corsair may be better....for extreme overclockers, but for most peeps...Crucial should be ideal.

I only wanted to corsair because I alrady have a stick of xms3000 cas2.
if you really want the upgrade, i might be able to hook you up with a buyer for your current video card. let me know if you're interested. i cant promise they'd bite... but it's a thought.

Well if u plan to get more ram and already have corsair there, save up and get another stick, it would just be an insult to get some crappy brand and corsair. Match them up.
i agree aagiants.
it'd almost be like being married to lauren graham from gilmore girls and then taking roseanna on as a mistress.
just plain dumb.
sometimes, in our rush to upgrade, we forget the simple rules.
