FORMAT C:

It is very difficult to determine what your exact problem will be. But the most important thing to remember... NEVER install any software your Broadband company gives you. And Never let the technician install the company provided software.

The only thing that should have been done is to set up your network card with the IP address or DHCP to obtain an address from the cable modem.

A change that takes about 15 seconds to complete.
If the tech spent mor time on your computer than about 15 seconds, then I'd think about the Format C: option and install everything from scratch.

Besides, Windows needs to be reinstalled every couple of months, anyhow. Especially if you download cracked files and games and install and uninstall all the time.

Can someone tell me how to get online without installing my broadband company's software. Also how do I find what my IP address is and so forth? Danke.

First off, Windows does NOT need to be reinstalled every couple months, period. Sounds like you need to get more familiar with cleaning your registry.

Bloodstir, it would depend on the type of service you have and whether or not the ISP requires proprietary software. As far as finding out your IP address, what Operating System are you using?

My ISP is Verizon Dsl, and my OS is winxp pro.

Verizon does PPP. That doesn't mean you have to use their PPP software though.

As far as finding your IP, go to start>run type CMD <enter>

Youll get a black dos box. type this in at the prompt: ipconfig <enter>

Note, <enter> is a command to hit the key, not a word to type ;)

I don't quite understand what your trying to say but I'll break it down for you.

Broadband ISP's (Internet Service Providers) usually use what's called Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). DHCP is used to grab a Internet Protocol address (IP address) from one of the companies broadband routers. This is done in a matter of seconds and shouldn't use any additional software to perform. If you have software that was provided by your ISP I certainly don't suggest using it. Uninstalling the software is hard sometimes and sometimes impossible. I've noticed that broadband software usually attches itself to IE so you see some type of advertisement or logo that looks like it's built into IE. But if this isn't the case for you and you're using a completely different program, I suggest trying to uninstall it or Deinstall which some network Guru's call it.

Click start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs

A current installed programs box will appear and eventually show you a list of software loaded onto your machine. If you know the program name try looking for it in this box and clicking

Add/Remove to get rid of it.

You can find your IP address easily by clicking on
Start>Run
In the command box type command or cmd <Enter>
at the prompt type ipconfig <Enter>
this will display your ip address

If your DHCP is enabled it is really easy to release and renew your ip address anytime you want. This is all the technicians do when installing broadband. They just enable DHCP if it isn't and whatever modem you're using will ping the router, grab an ip, and BOOM your on the NET!

AND PLEASE DON'T FORMAT YOUR HARD DRIVE UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. There is a program called Defrag you know that will help your Hard drive put together those fragmented files.
