I've just been set up with DSL service through Execulink. Until now I've had an account with Bell Sympatico, but I've now cancelled that account.

They sent me a D-Link DSL-3001 modem. I already have a D-Link DI-704 router, which I've upgraded to the latest firmware.

I've tried connecting with the modem hooked directly up to one of my computer's Ethernet cards through the software provided, and it works fine. However, when I connect through the router my download speed drops to around 30kb/s.

I'm running Windows 98. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be?

From what I've been told, D-Link seems to be on the lower end of quality routers. It could be the router itself. You might also want to try a Linksys router; it is very cheap and easy to set up. ($70)

Are you on PPPoE DSL? If so, is your machine doing the PPP conection? Is your router capable of handling the PPP connection? If so I'd try that, letting the Router pass the user/pass instead of doing it from the machine in question.

Are you on PPPoE DSL?

If you're new isp uses ppoe and you old one didn't, you might want to adjust your mtu from 1500 to...I THHIHNK IT'S 1492 - someone please confirm that value.

Yeah...Columbus sailed the ocean blue...in 1492. That's what I always set it to. Curiously though, Symantecs modified Nexland routers only go up to 1472.....I forget on my Nexland router at home...think it's the same.

Add to that, DLink is one of the slower routers out there.
