after doing some research on this forum about my problem, i just wanted to post my solution which may help others with this problem.

after getting cable modem in nyc time warner and road runner.
connected to the pc direct i was getting like 2000 k down and 300 up.

after hooking up my linksys befvp41 router to the cable modem (some rca cable modem) my
download speed dropped to 100k. no decrease on upload speed.

after doing some research on this forum, the problem lies with the linksys 10 mbit wan
connection, i guess certain cable modems dont like it.

things that i tryed:

1.hooking up smc router with a 100 mbit wan port. results got good download speed.
2.hooking up smc router than puting the linksys 10mbit behind it (connecting it to 10/100)
port on the smc lan side. results bad download speed.

my final solution:
got the new linksys BEFSX41 with a 10/100 wan port. disable SPI, just using nat,
my final download speed was about 1500k and upload 300. i can live with that.
i basically using these routers cause i needed a vpn to the office. other vpn routers which
worked flawlessly: sonicwall soho, tele. or if you dont need vpn the smc worked fine too.

i hope this helps other with this frustrating problem.
