View Full Version : Norton
I have a question. I use Norton for my anti-virus protection. I usually get a couple of emails a month with a virus which Norton always catches. When it notifies me of the virus it usually cannot repair the virus and tells me that I should quarantine it. I follow the suggestion and then I go and delete the virus from quarantene. Each time I go to delete it I get a warning asking me if I am sure if I want to delete it. My question is, WHY ask such a question? Why would I not want to delete it or even consider keeping it in quarantene?
Thanks for any answers.:D
That's a good question for the people at Symantec.
I've wondered about that myself. If your new to the program, that statement kind of rattles you and makes you wonder if your doing the right thing. I don' t have a good answer for this one.
Maybe they want you to send it to them....... lol
Yes, I have seen that response, but disregarded it as I want it OFF my PC...'begone from me, you louse"...hehehehe
:D
Seeing the Norton folk have appeared ;) can I ask what the Manual says about this?
There must be some mention of this phenomenon somewhere in the Help Files. A quick look at Symantic's Knowledge Base turned up nothing. ;)
Croc.
That is some challenge croc....I leave it up to blebs for this one.
In the manual for Norton AV Pro 2003, Page 79, it states "Deletes the selected files from your computer"....
So I think blebs has a direct connection to Symantec, so he can respond to this.
(He has to have his profit margin)
:D
I have sent the question to their tech dept. We will see what they say.

I think it's just standard practice, and good practice, to double check before actually deleting any file....just to make sure you want it deleted.
Quarantine is a "safe padded room" to keep infected files....often new definitions come out which allow you to clean infected files held in quarantine..and safely restore them to their original location. In which case Quarantine is a good thing.
Also gives you a chance to make sure you're replaced that file before deleting it....say a Windows System file.
I think it's always good to have another "Are you sure you wish to do this".

:D I wish I had a PROFIT! Everything around me is going in Red Ink and LOSS. Man, I hope this economy gets it's act together pretty soon, but I don't think we've seen the worst of it yet. :(
Well I contacted Norton Support about this and the following is their answer. It took several contacts to get this answer since they answered every other question except what I originally asked but here it is finally.
Yes, you can delete them (remove them from quarantine) and they will
also be removed from your system. When files are placed in Quarantine,
they are compressed, encrypted and then moved into the Quarantine
directory. They are unable to function, or be made to function, unless
restored via the Quarantine Console. Any virus or malicious code
present will no longer be recognizable while in Quarantine.
All of the files in your Quarantine were created by the viruses, and
do not belong on your computer. You may delete them any time you wish.
Files in quarantine are in effect already deleted from your system.
The quarantine allows the files to be restored or deleted from a safe
place isolated from the rest of the computer.
For information on deleting files from Quarantine, please see the
document provided below:

Saved, regarding the confirmation dialog box, which appears when you
attempt to delete a file from quarantine, please be aware that this is
a default procedure of NAV to confirm whether you really want to
delete the file or to keep that in quarantine.
