View Full Version : Need help with Trojan.crabbox
My friend downloaded a song from Morpheus and ran the file. Apparently the "trojan.crabbox" file was with it. He went out and bought Norton 2003 bit it failed to Quarantined and failed to Delete. What can I do to get this trojan virus off?
from the Symantic site
NOTE: These instructions are for all current and recent Symantec antivirus products, including the Symantec AntiVirus and Norton AntiVirus product lines.
Update the virus definitions, run a full system scan, and delete all files that are detected as Trojan.Crabox. For details on how to do this, read the following instructions.
To scan for and delete the infected files:
1. Obtain the most recent virus definitions. There are two ways to do this:
Run LiveUpdate, which is the easiest way to obtain virus definitions. These virus definitions have undergone full quality assurance testing by Symantec Security Response and are posted to the LiveUpdate servers one time each week (usually Wednesdays) unless there is a major virus outbreak. To determine whether definitions for this threat are available by LiveUpdate, look at the Virus Definitions (LiveUpdate) line at the top of this write-up.
Download the definitions using the Intelligent Updater. Intelligent Updater virus definitions have undergone full quality assurance testing by Symantec Security Response. They are posted on U.S. business days (Monday through Friday). They must be downloaded from the Symantec Security Response Web site and installed manually. To determine whether definitions for this threat are available by the Intelligent Updater, look at the Virus Definitions (Intelligent Updater) line at the top of this write-up.
Intelligent Updater virus definitions are available here. For detailed instructions on how to download and install the Intelligent Updater virus definitions from the Symantec Security Response Web site, click here.
2. Start your Symantec antivirus program, and make sure that it is configured to scan all files.
Norton AntiVirus Consumer products: Read the document How to configure Norton AntiVirus to scan all files.
Symantec Enterprise antivirus products: Read the document How to verify a Symantec Corporate antivirus product is set to scan All Files.
3. Run a full system scan.
4. If any files are detected as infected by Trojan.Crabox, click Delete.
The search was for "crabox".
"crabbox" came up empty.
Do as Symantic says and get the latest update and follow the directions.
Have fun.

According to the info here (http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99629.htm) you may have to do more if either WinME or Win XP are the OS.
Use this link if the info is needed (http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm)
Crocedit.
Thanks , that second link may work. Followed the instructions you pasted lats night , didnt help. I'll try disabling the System Restore next time i see him , thanks!!!
Hey guys , didnt work. After turning off restore in both ME and XP the file still couldnt be deleted or quarantined. Are there any programs out there that delete Trojans? I know there are trojan scanners but do they alos delete the file once its found? Thanks again , I look forward to your responses.

Another great virus/trojan fixer is The Cleaner. You can get it for 30 days free here (http://www.moosoft.com) . I use it and it is GREAT!
I'm going to my friends place tonight. I have a question the trojan in question has attached itself to the "restore" file. I turned off the Restore option but it still didnt delete last time. Will the trojan scanner/cleaner delete this file????? Nortons could'nt.

I didn't see a reference to crabbox in The Cleaner's database of trojans. That is not to say it would detect it. It just might go by a different name.
You should get an image like this:

If you were searching for "crabbox" you may not find anything
The file you should have been looking for is:
"crackerbox.exe".
Re-read the instructions at the links I posted for the way to get rid of this. The image shows the name of the file you need to look for. According to the link in the previous post of mine tiis is a Trojan that was placing an MP3 site under a DDOS attack and these have been redirected away from the site.

Thanks for the clarification, Croc. And, yes, CrackerBox is in the cleaner's database.
With CrackerBox being listed in TheCleaner I would use that rather than SwatIt. There are some stability issues here with SwatIt :( and I have had to remove it. Maybe I have too many of these apps on the system.
