I cannot raise the MTU value higher than 1442 in Windows XP pro, and wondered if someone can give me some help.

* Its a fresh install on a new hard disk
* 1500 is shown in the registry but when I visit some sites for
diagnostics it shows it as 1442.
* I have tried various tools including Dr_TCP etc to change it
* I am running a Draytek 2600 modem/ router
* Netgear F311 network card

Many thanks in advance

Ian

If you are using XP's PPPoE software it should be 1480, if you are using your ISP's software it should be 1492, try the following fix from Bob Carrick:

1) Download this file http://www.carricksolutions.com/XP_MTU.reg
2) Right click the file and choose "Merge"
3) Click "Yes"
4) Go to "Start" -> Click on "Run" -> Type in "Regedt32.exe" -> Click "OK"
5) Go to this Reg Key "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\NdisWan\ Parameters\Protocols\0]"
6) Double click on "Protocol MTU"
7) Click on "Decimal" -> Enter your desired value (I.E.: Anything less then 1480.) Use 1480
8) Click "OK"
9) Done!

Are you using a Netgear router or just a Netgear card?

Hi,

Thanks for all your help but I have found out that the router is specifing the MTU. Once I had telnet to the box I could change it to 1500.
