I have a home network with 3 computers. They all share a cable internet connection behind a D-link 704p router. Even when my machine is the only one using the internet I don't get very good speeds. It is especially apparent in on-line games such as UT 2003. With that particular game I have a constant lag of about 1 second regardless of the ping to the servers I'm playing on. When I disconnect the router and plug the cable modem directly to my computer the problem goes away and my speed for games and downloads greatly improves. Can anyone tell me why this is?

Latest firmware on the router?

Most routers by now have an advanced setup section on their web admin....one section to look for is MTU...have it set to 1492 - 1500....try other settings to see how your performance goes.

I'm not a big fan of DLink stuff...even though their far from high performing, it still shouldn't be killing your performance that much.

Is TCP/IP the only thing running on your network?

The NICs in each computer.....if you can, try changing some different settings just for testing....such as duplex.full.half.auto.
