View Full Version : using dial up for folding ?
i am folding on my spare PC on free netzero dial up now so i can just leave it running without having to buy a router for my cable.
is there anything i need to configure in folding or anything to let it dial up by itself ?
i am only allowed 10 hours per week free
Are you sure paying for 1 phone call for every unit you finish is worth it? If you got way too much money, just donate it directly to cancer research or whatever, at least that way it is tax deductable.
not paying for any phone calls, just using a free dial up service that resticts me to 10 hours of online per week, not sure what you mean ????
i am just wondering how i can make it dial up on its own ??
thanks
In the country I live, we pay for phone calls when we dial up our ISP. So even though the ISP is free, the telephone company charges us for every phone call we make, except for 1800 numbers, where the receiver pays for the phone call. 1800 numbers thus generally belong to businesses where they entice you to ring them for free but make a sale out of it.
Thus it would be uneconomical to pay the phone company for each WU that is completed. It would be more money efficient to donate the funds to a charity (thus the tax deductability), then to pay the phone company.
If of course you get free phone calls, go for it.

There's nothing special to set up. It'll initiate the call but I don't think it'll disconnect. Just times out. Not sure about that, though. I'll try to pay attention to what my wife's dial-up folder does.

that is what was wondering, if it would shut off the modem so i would not go over my 10 hours a week limit.
if this does not work then i will just buy a router, need it sooner or later anyways.
thanks to all who have gave much love too this thread :)
So do you get totally free internet without having to pay the phone company for the phone call?
that is what they advertise so time will tell

The phone companies here in the U.S. offer several different plans that we can buy.
Local area calling plans: (usually within 25 miles, with extra calling area out to 50 miles available at extra cost)
1. 25 calls per month free and then pay for every call thereafter.
2. All calls free of extra cost.
Of course option 2 costs more per month and is encouraged by the phone company as they don't have to keep track of number of calls.
And there are probably other calling plans that are offered.
They sound like good deals, especially if you make a lot of calls. No such luck here. We have 2 different monthly price plans as well, but they only change the local call cost by US 2 cents and therefore cost US$1.50 per month more, so you need to make 75 calls to break even.
Only country I knew had free local calls was Singapore.
