I only have a 10Mbit network so I need all the speed I can get ;). I havn't used the network much until now, but I remember testing it back when I still had Win98 and I had twice the transfer rate than now. I used to reach almost 1mb/s, which is pretty much all you can get from a 10Mbit network. Now I'm getting 500kb/s in WinXp pro. I had the same problem when I had Win2Kpro aswell. Nothing has changed since then besides getting better network cards (D-Links 530TX+ 10/100) and OS upgrades. I'm guessing it's the NetBeui protocal I'm using for my network, but I have to use that becaues no other protocal will work for file/printer sharing. My network currently consists of 3 computers running WinXP, before it was a mix of Win98, WinME and Win2K :).

Better than what? What NIC's did you have before. I am also assuming you you meant 1MB(ytes)/s and 500 kB(ytes)/sec, not kilobits?

How are the computers connected to each, through a hub, router, etc. and what speed is the hub, router, etc , 10 or 100 mb?

DLink better? Whoooomph.....begs the question what did you have before? Those are given out free by SBC-Yahoo for DSL...that exact same model. They used to give out Kingston NICs' also.

Anyways, do you have TCP/IP and NetBEUI both loaded as protocols? If so, can you unbind TCP/IP from networking services, allowing only NetBEUI to handle that...instead of both protocols running networking services at the same time (twice the traffic).

Why couldn't you get F&P sharing running with TCP/IP?

NetBEUI on a small network is faster for network services...up around 30 - 50 computers does TCP become faster....depending upon what's running.

Is there anything governing TCP/IP addresses on your network? Like a server, or router? If not, did you try manually assigning TCP addresses?

Depending upon what your hub is...you should be reaching or just passing 1.0.

You mentioned going from Win98 to 2K to XP...is this all on the same computer hardware? If so, I'd say that the more bloated OS's running on the same CPU and RAM just bog it down more. You should see faster transfer rates in NT based OS's over Win9X based OS's because of the more dynamic TCP stack....but countering that, perhaps upgrading the same older hardware with newer more bloated OS's counteracted that...making the CPU work _that_much_harder.

According to winXP task manager, I am only using 5% of my network bandwidth. My LAN connection is 100mbps which s hould be approx 12.5MB/sec but I am only getting less that 1MB transfer. I remember getting speeds like 6.5MB/sec before but maybe that was because I had win2k. Can anyone help me out here? I've tried increasing the Rwin and stuff like that.

My network consist of 2 computers connected to a 4 -port linksys router which is 100mbps. 100/8 = 12.5MB/sec transfer. I am transferring large files over 100MB in size. I want to know how I can increase the speed back to it's original which was about 6.0MB +/sec.

i have 2 HD's. 1 is ata 100 the other is ata 66.

could FAT32 to NTFS transfer have any affect on speed?
TIA
