hey all-
I use a Netgear RP114 router, and am having problems sending and recieving files via AIM or Trillin. Do I need to forward any ports? I used to be able to do file transfers no problem, but now I can't. I've disabled Zone Alarm to no avail.

Yes, you will have to forward ports to use the P2P file tranfer functions of these programs. Consult the websites for the messaging program you use to find out the ports they use for file transfers.
Once you have the ports you need to configure the Netgear to pass traffic on these ports to the PC's on your LAN running these clients. Configuring the port forwarding features of the Netgear are a little much to go into detail here about, but consulting the manual that came with your router will walk you step by step on how to port forward.
If you are not sure of a concept in the manual come on back and we can answer it for you.

I am having the same problem. When we try to transfer files, it just hangs on "trying to connect to buddy". Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks.
PS. I use a different router (Linksys).
it will not let you receive files if your off dmz mode..mine never would...but..urs might be different.

Placing a computer in the DMZ is very dangerous. You remove yourself from the built in security of the NAT firewall and expose yourself to hackers.
This problem is easily fixed by forwarding only the ports needed to allow open end to end communication between the two clients.

Do you know how to do this?
If that is the problem, than a little help on how to forward the ports would be greatly appreciated. I am running XP Pro.
Also, what ports do I need to forward for AIM and MSN Messenger?
Thanks a million!
Try this site for the ports: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/app_port_list.htm
