Using a linksys router I am setting up a network with two computers with different operating systems (WinME and WinXP). I have successfully connected the two, but I am worried about security issues (as WinXP does not support NetBUI and I currently have file and print sharing enabled on TCP/IP on WinME).

What is the best way to network the two securely? Also, does the router protect both computers even if file and print sharing is selected in WinME (or should I use a different protocol that is supported by both operating systems)?

Windows XP DOES support NetBEUI. The files you need are located in the VALUEADD\MSFT\NET directory I believe and a text file exists in that directory instructing you how to install it.

Make sure you navigate to the Advanced Settings of the Network Connections Window that lists all your network connections and UNBIND TCP/IP from File/Print Sharing on your XP box.
