I have 3 machines on a home network, all were sharing a cable IP through an Ovislink SR500 router. I had problems with opening req'd ports on the various machines for games the kids played and a business app I run. My service provider starting giving a 2nd IP at no additional cost so I went to an Ovislink SW500 switch, with the plan to have two machines each pull an IP and the third machine connected to one of the others through a second NIC card, a crossover cable and ICS enabled.
Machine 1 AMD 900 Athlon, 2 nics, one to the switch on a straight through cat 5 cable, the other connected to machine 2 through a crossover cable.
Machine 2 AMD 800 Athlon 1 nic connected to machine 1 as described above.
Machine 3 older k6 300 1 nic card connected to the switch.
All machines run Win 98SE, only machine 1 has ICS enabled.
Machine 1 and 2 connected together work as planned however when 2 & 3 are connected directly to the switch they will pull the IP and start downloading a page then stall completely. They will reach the mail server and if there is no new mail will operate as normal. If there is mail they will start downloading then stall part way through.
I have taken the nic card from machine 1 and installed it in the other machines, no change. I've trade all the various cable combinations, a brand new nic card and still no change. In fact, I have 1 and 3 beside each other, 1 connecting to the switch, working fine. Move the cable and nic to 3, connects but stalls. Put the nic that was originally in 3 into one and connect the cable to it works fine. I seem to have determined that it is something upstream from the nic. I compared the network settings of the 2 machines and made sure they were identical. Still nothing.
What brought me to this site is that is seemed to recall having been to this site before and run the registry tweaks, but was fairly certain I hadn't installed them on all 3 machines. I downloaded and ran the inf that is supposed to return the registry settings to the defaults, still no change.
I don't really have a good working knowledge of registry entries to go any further down that road. Gratefull for any help anybody can provide.
