Hey People,
I recently installed a small network with 5 pc's in an office building. All the cableing is fine, "tested", but for some reason I cannot see the other computers altough, the link light on the NIC card is on, and the link light on the hub is on. I tried pinging to one another, but with no luck. I used CAT5 Solid UTP cable, with normal type (not Keystone) wall Jacks. After doing some investigation, I changed the Link speed from "autosense" to 10mbps Half Duplex, and all is working fine now. In the past I did not have to change the Link speed, I always left it on Autosense. From yor past experience, what might cause that? the only thing I can think of is the wall plate. Your thoughts? I tried looking everywhere, but with no luck!

From my past experience....when you connect a network, and nothing happens...if you have to manually lock down a NIC to see the rest....

*Faulty wiring, was it home made/terminated? Tested with professional equipment?
*Wiring has been run too close to something that gives off EMI, such as flourescent lighting in drop down ceilings if you run your wiring through there, speakers, main breaker boxes, etc.
*All equipment isn't 10/100 autosense....may have a 10 only hub, or a 100 only hub/switch, etc. Off-brand hub/switch? Off-brand NICs? Over the years, I've learned to trust only 3COM or Intel NICs.

I had this exact same probelm in my house. In my case it was faulty termination on my wiring. There are specific orders you have to have the different coloured wire put togheter. I forget what the two strandards are, but I'm sure someone here knows. As soon as I put new ends on the wires everything just worked perfectly.

I have heard of that too. Pins 1 & 2 , transmit, need to be one twisted pair and 3 & 6 , receive, the other. As far as I know the other wires aren't used. I found this out when I tried to make my own crossover cable. After I paired the wires it worked perfectly.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the help, I figured out what it was. The wall plates I was using was some no-name wallplates with it's own wiring on it, very similar to a regular phone jack. I found out that the wireing on the jack was thin-net, therefore only transmitted @ 10mbps. I changed the wallplates to "keystones" and it works perfectly fine now. Again I appreciate all the help, I took all your recommendations into consideration, and I will definately keep them in mind the next time around
