Im trying to decide which router to get. I also game, so I'm concerned about pings...

These are the units Im trying to decide between:

Linksys BEFW11S4
D-Link DI-764
Netgear HR314
Nexland WaveBase

Now I know that the D-link and Netgear units are 802.11a routers, but I am concerned about wireless network speeds. Gotta have the speed man!

Which one should I get? And Why should I get it?

Thanks!

I've had nothing but success with the 4 Linksys wireless routers I've installed for various clients. As long as you get the Orinoco PC cards instead of the Linksys PC cards, the range will be adequate and the latency and stability will be good as well.

If you're concerned about gaming and pings....I'd stay away from wireless....unless you don't mind an "average" ping at best. Me? I like to have something waaay below 100.

Orinoco makes some great wireless products. As far as routers go, Nexland makes pretty much the most powerful (read....FAST) home market routers. LAN transfer speeds have nothing to do with ping....you can be on a 10 base LAN, or a 100 Base LAN...ping has nothing to do with throughput....since you're comparing A with it's 54 at best (20 - 25 in the real world), and the older B with 11 at best (3 - 5 in the real world). Your WAN link is most likely below 1.5 anyways....a chain is only as strong as the weakest link.

Now is a tough time to buy....as this fall, G is coming out, with access points running combo's of both A and B. This will drive prices way down on current B's, and the newer A's.

I'm adding wireless to my houses network...but my server and gaming rig are staying on the CAT6 ethernet....the lady's laptop will be the only one wireless.

YeOldeStoneCat...

That basically what I want to do. Keep the main PC on Cat 5 or 6, and put my lady's laptop (whenever she gets it) on wireless.

Do you suggest I get the Nexland Pro 400 or 800 turbo now and buy a separate WAP later? Or should I keep running ICS (ewwww!!! yuck!!!!) and add a WAP? you guys have never steered me wrong before. Whatever advice you give, you know I will listen to...

Thanks ! ! !

Wireless, and 4 port switch...all in one mighty potent Nexland unit.

LOL...good one. Like saying an S3 Virge video card owns over a GeForce 3.

I like Linksys routers for very basic networks with the most humble of needs, ease of use, etc...but performance wise...don't even think about comparing them. The Nexland is far more powerful.....by miles.
