I have a win98 and a winXP machine connected to a Linksys cable router to share cable access. The WinXP machine is fine, everything works there.

The Win98 machine pauses for a long time upon booting up and then has an odd IP address...not the 192.168.1.102 it is supposed to have from the router.

Anyone know what could be wrong here?

Thanks for the help in advance ;)

It is not finding the DHCP "server" in the router, as you probably suspected. What are the current settings in the network configuration on the W98 machine?

Make sure you are getting a connection with the router, all the lights are on that are supposed to be on the router. Tried a different port on the router?

If you have gone through all the possible configuration settings, you might try assigning a static IP to that machine.

I'm guessing you're getting a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP address....which Windows will assign itself if it doesn't find a DHCP server.

Is the NIC on the 98 box getting a link light? On the Linksys router, the port that the 98 box is plugged into....also getting a link light?

So you know that the NIC is good? If so, is it installed properly? Nothing kicked out in Device Manager under Network Adapters?

Last ditch....assign it an IP like 192.168.1.12, 255.255.255.0 subnet mask. Gateway of 192.168.1.1, leave WINS disabled, and assign it's DNS to be your router for now...192.168.1.1, host is your computers network identification, domain you can leave blank, or type in your ISP's formal domain name.
