I know David and some others has asked about this...

http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html#misc.power

Roughly, a CPU uses about as much power as a 60 watt lightbulb.

:) My computers would be on anyway, so my answer is ZERO extra.

Good answer Rick! ;) Mine too!

Actually, it is better to leave your puter running 24/7...
Cutting it on and off is not good as hot and cold causes expansion and contraction, not a good thing for a puter... ;)

Running 24/7 allows the puter temp to stabilize...

You do not "wear out" your CPU by leaving it on! There is no "moving" parts to wear out... ;) Totally different than say an engine in a car...

I leave the dang thing on 24/7 so I figured I might as well be folding 24/7. If it costs me a little more in power (by the research) so what. If I figured up how much power I waste on running dual monitors and leaving the stereo on and the tv output that I use I mean heck I prolly use less kWh now because I actually turn off the crap I don't need so that my folding speeds will be faster.

I guess it is a good thing all the way around. I am doing something good and savin myself a few bux by trying to be a little competitive within the team.

I may be new but I am on the rise. Pretty soon you will all be hearing my exhaust rippin through the night air as I zoom past you one by one. :rotfl: [/wishing]

how much power/money?

answer for me is $0
as I live with my parents on a military base and the military pays for power and stuff like that :D :p

I did'nt see a raise in my electric bill xcept when i had the ac on for 2 1/2 months straight. Geeeeez it got soo hot i had to.

I leave my rigs on 24/7 also and i think it costs me another $5 to keep em running.

Ain't nuttin compared to the innocent lives that are lost to these deseases.

After comparing this years electric bills with last summer, it costs me about $175 to $180 extra a month to run 8 computers 24/7 (monitors off), and 2 fans with a 6000 btu window ac also running 24/7. However the temp this summer has been averaging higher than last year, so that may be helping to contribute to the extra electricity as I have been running my house ac a little more than last summer.

When it comes to electricity consumption, the current graphics cards are not that far behind the CPU. So if you are very energy conscious, get an old ISA VGA card with 512kb of memory and no 3D support.

Just imagine how much Folding they could do if the code also ran on your graphics card. Not sure how much the graphics card could do, but it sure would be cool if it contributed in some way.

Even though the CPU is not a moving part, the hard disks spin and they do wear out. Out of my last 4 hard disks, 2 died in just under 1 year and were replaced under warrenty, 2 died just after 1 year and thus had to replaced at my expense.

Not sure on how to overcome that problem. Maybe get Folding burnt into ROM and boot the computer without a hard disk and just start Folding? ;)

But there is no doubt that if the computer is on anyway, there is a zero increase in usage cost of whether the computer is just sitting there waiting for you to do something, or if it is folding in the background. ALL computers that are turned on, anywhere, should be doing something usefull like Folding.

configure a ramdisk and install the F@H client to it. At least that way the read/write from F@H wont be a contributing factor to wear.

It doesn't really use my hdd very much. The Cheetahs will give a blink and it's done... ;)

I never turn the puters off, but I do turn the monitors off... ;)

///red with envy re: those Cheetahs///

Same here....24/7, only turn off the monitors...they use most of the juice anyways.
