I recently tried out some of the speed patches that SG offers and for awhile I experienced an increase in throughput. However, after a day or so of use, my download rates dropped immensely. I removed the changes made by the patch and I am still having the same problem.

Another thing I noticed is that no matter what I change my RWIN to, it doesn't change in the analyzer. It is always 1460 without the patch and 365 unscaled with the patch and the vtcp.386 fix. Does anyone know what could be wrong and how I can get my download speeds at least back to what they were? Here's all the info from the analyzer. Btw, I'm on a T3 connection on a college network.

TCP properties for IP = XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98SE)
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 1460
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 1460
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 58.4 kbps (7.3 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 23.36 kbps (2.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

did you have window scaling turn on if rwin is bigger then 65535 it should be a check box in there in the under window scaling sg optimizer. Also make sure you have ur netowrk card listed under select network adapter in the sg optimizer

Yeah, all of those things were done. What I can't understand is why after going back to default settings my download speed went to crap. It's worse than what it originally was, which was pretty damn good. Also, why is my RWIN stuck at 1460 in the analyzer, despite using different settings?

Have you tried using Cablenut 4.08 and entering the suggested settings in it for Windows 98?

No, I haven't tried Cablenut yet. And Mohan, the only problem with doing the tweak test, which I actually have done, is that I have no idea what to put for my conn or speed. As I mentioned, I'm running on a T3, but that choice is not available. Any ideas as to what I should put? Maybe cable with 8000kbs?

Thats not really important. Yo can fill those in with anything.

To make another point, I've tested my d/l speed on a number of different sites. The one where I noticed the most change was Microsoft's site. I was able to d/l about 400KB/s from them and now I'm down to 30KB/s on a good day. I was wondering if anyone could try d/ling from them just so I know it's not them.

I'm not too familiar with T3 speeds. So is it 8000kbps?

If so try downloading SG optimizer from Here (http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe)

Then...

Settings tab:

select - Extreme
check - custom settings
network adapter selection - your NIC
check modify all adapters
maxmtu - 1500
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - 256960
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options - check Windows scaling not Timestamps.

Then try and see if it made a difference. If not come back. :)

Even the speed at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=40175 has increased, not 400, but it's better. I'm beginning to think it's a prob with Microsoft and not me though. Maybe you could verify that, Mohan. But for now, it looks like everything is great. Thanks a lot man :)

Hmm...I just ran into a little prob. It seems my d/l speed is limited on some sites and great others. When I say limited, I mean that it's actually lower now than it was before. I think I can live with it though :) However, if you've got any suggestions, Mohan, I'd be happy to try them out.

Okey dokey. I'm guessing its a 20 000/ 5000 connection.

Try the following and compare with the TCPpotimzer results, then report back with the speeds.

Your best bet is to get Mnosteele to configure Cablenut, as I'm not too familiar with Cablenut for Win98se as I have WinXP.

CableNut download (http://www.student.ipfw.edu/~gottjl01/files/cablenut408.exe)

But for the time being try these settings.

BcastNameQueryCount - 1
BcastQueryTimeout - 100
BSDUrgent - 1
CacheTimeout - 600000
DefaultRecvWindow - 770880
DefaultTTL - 64
EnableDNS - 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindoSize - 770880
KeepAliveInterval - 500
KeepAliveTime - 14400000
Lanabase - 0
LocalCopyMade - 1
MaxConnections - 64
MaxConnectRetries - 5
MaxDataRetries - 64
NameTableSize - 255
NameSrvQueryTimeout - 100
PMTUBlackHoleDetect - 0
PMTUDiscovery - 1
RoutingBufSize - 146432
RoutingPackets - 100
SackOpts - 1
SessionKeepAlive - 7200
SessionTableSize - 255
Size/Small/Medium/Large - 3
Tcp1323Opts - 0
TcpTimedWaitDelay - 30
MaxDupAcks - 2
DefaultTOS - 92
IGMPLevel - 2
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server - 40
MaxConnectionsPerServer - 20

Also take a look HERE (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73799&highlight=win98) and you'll find some helpful tweaks to make your connection that much faster.

Sorry if that was all confusing, if so just ask. :)

The settings in Cablenut were a lot worse. My throughput decreased by 10,000 in the Speakeasy speed tests, and my d/l speeds are worse than ever. I'm about to revert my settings back to what you gave me yesterday. Do you know anyway I can get in touch with Mnosteele?

Looking

As it stands now, my d/l speeds are up slightly, but no where near where they were last night, and in some cases are a lot worse than last night or today with the Cablenut settings. I don't know if Cablenut screwed with something or what. I backed up my registry before using it and restored it after I removed all the Cablenut settings. I noticed however that the restore didn't return all of my settings, which means that there are others that could be missing...

Ok open up Cablenut then click on Delete Cablenut Tweaks, save , then apply, then reboot. Then go back to TCPoptimizer and use the extreme settings.

You can get a hold of Mnosteele on these boards, try and PM him to come to this thread.

I don't know what's up, but I'm completely worse right now. The settings you gave me yesterday aren't working at all right now. Something definitely happened with Cablenut. I PMed Mnosteele. Hopefully he can give me some advice that will get Cablenut working good. Thanks again Mohan.

Try the following in Cablenut:

BcastNameQueryCount - 1
BcastQueryTimeout - 100
BSDUrgent - 1
CacheTimeout - 600000
DefaultRecvWindow - 64240 or 128480 or 256960
DefaultTTL - 64
EnableDNS - 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindoSize - 64240 or 128480 or 256960
KeepAliveInterval - 500
KeepAliveTime - 14400000
Lanabase - 0
LocalCopyMade - 1
MaxConnections - 64
MaxConnectRetries - 5
MaxDataRetries - 99
NameTableSize - 255
NameSrvQueryTimeout - 100
PMTUBlackHoleDetect - 0
PMTUDiscovery - 1
RoutingBufSize - 146432
RoutingPackets - 100
SackOpts - 1
SessionKeepAlive - 7200
SessionTableSize - 255
Size/Small/Medium/Large - 3
Tcp1323Opts - 0 (set to 1 if DefaultRecvWindow is 65535 or higher)
TcpTimedWaitDelay - 30
MaxDupAcks - 2
DefaultTOS - 92
IGMPLevel - 2
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server - 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer - 10

Also as suggested above make sure you have the vtcp386 patch (http://www.speedguide.net/files/vtcp386/236926USA8.EXE). Use the DSLR Tweak Test to make sure your settings took effect since sometimes the TCP/IP Analyzer Test shows the wrong results. Also make sure you have followed my other suggestions such as setting your NIC duplex mode in my Help & Tips link, with your setup try setting it to 100mb full duplex mode.:D :)

None of the settings really worked that great. I've got the NIC settings on hardware default right now and everything seems fine, although my throughput is still down a lot further than last night and I'm noticing some stuttering.

Hey guys I figured I'd try out Mohan's settings one more time in the Optimizer and lo and behold I'm running great. I'm seeing improvements all around (minus Microsoft, and I'm pretty sure now that it's definitely them :)).

I don't know why it's working but what I basically did was clear out all the Cablenut settings, restored my registry backup, and used the default SG patch. I then rebooted my machine and ran some tests with default settings. After that I ran the Optimizer, added the settings, rebooted and tested. My throughput is back to where it was yesterday and all my downloads are super fast. I'm able to d/l anywhere from 700KB-1.1MB/s (previously only 300KB) off of the OOL test site, which I'm VERY happy about :D

So, I'd like to say again thanks for all the help Mohan and Mnosteele. You guys are life savers. If you can think of the perfect settings, plz let me know :) Ttyl.

That download of DX8.1 is really slow. Try not to download from Microsoft's site as all the downloads seem pretty slow.
