USB sucks.
Get a modem that uses a network card.
DSL users can tell you what brand.

You should check with your ISP tech support for proper modems to use with their system. Usually the modem has to be registered along with the MAC address of your network card. There are ADSL modems out now that plug directly into the PCI BUS (which eliminates the network card) your Internet supplier can let you know whats availble for their system.
Your speed might also be related to how strong the ISP system backbone is, try some tests at DSL reports to see if it's the equipment or the ISP's setup.
hope that helps a bit,

Efficient Networks Speedstream 5260 and the newer 5360 modems are great. I've never had to register any MAC for DSL, I've setup many networks with modems I've gotten for my clients.
I also prefer external modems, not internal ones. Internal ones are more likely to hose your system if a surge comes in, plus are flexible in the fact that if you wish to use a router to share your network, you're all set.
