Got the latest update for Nero and burned a VCD no problem (whereas older version of Nero, EZCD and NTI all failed).

Burns fine onto CDR and CDRW, but neither will play in my DVD player.

I already checked that my model supports VCD and that it will read them from CDR and CDRW (which are the only suggestions that are mentioned for this problem at VCDhelp.com)

Any other ideas? It was burned at 2x, DOA, the resolution was fine, no format problems were mentioned while it was burning.

The DVD player loads it for a while then brings up a blank mp3 screen on the TV.

Thanks

Did you burn it in PAL or NTSC format? My buddies dvd player won't play if its burned in NTSC. My pioneer plays both.

Just a shot in the dark....

Does it play ok as a vcd on the computer? If you haven't the software to use try powerdvd. My dvd player, a cheap alba chosen deliberately because the "better" ones often don't support other formats, comes up with VCD 2.0 whenever i put a vcd in.

I read somewhere that Nero does not burn VCD with 100% reliability and it is better to use CDRWIN, that is what I have been using, and so far no problems.

I have used both Nero and Cdrwin for burning vcd and svcd with no problems. some dvd player are real picky about the media being used. I suggest you first get a program called vcdgear, convert the mpg into a bin and burn with Cdrwin. If that doesn't work try different brand cdr(w).

Thanks for the replies folks.

They were burned NTSC, one on a Staples gold&blue, one a TDK silver and blue, I even tried a Nashua CDRW.

I'll look into the other burning software, but wow what a pain in the ass, lol.

Nope, doesn't play on the CDROM in the computer either. Thanks for the idea...but I don't want to watch them on my computer (already have them stored as DiVX avi's).

And do what with the .bin file? Once burned, how would it be readable by the player, or would it be burned as a VCD?

I'm following http://www.vcdhelp.com/cdrwin.htm but am not sure what good the .bin and .cue will be.

This is the steps I take to burn a vcd from a divx/avi file.

Here, this page (http://www.vcdhelp.com/divxtovcd.htm)

Then use Nero to burn it in either PAL or NTSC according to the file properties. I also usually burn onto a cd-rw. If I like a movie enough I'll buy it. Since most are cams or whatever...

All you need to do is with vcdgear, click on video cd, add your mpg track, name output file, start. That's it. It will create a Bin and Cue file. Burn and play.
Is the Mpg a standard 1150 bitrate vcd?

OK, worked fine that time!

Thanks for all the tips.
Odd that the only burning software that seems to work is CDRWin.

I noticed they have a 1x restriction on their trial version. Has anyone had any trouble using an *unrestricted* version? I found the information, but am a bit bugged by all the warnings they include about unlocking the software (Please PM me if you have any feedback).

Another question. By feeding the .bin and .cue to CDRWin and having it create the disk, did it create a VCD? If so, what is the difference in something like EZCD or Nero between creating a VCD and burning a .bin with their software?

Did that make sense? Is burning the .bin and .cue in CDRWin the same as making a VCD in another program? What is the difference between creating a VCD and burning a .bin? I'm not sure if it's all the same or if CDRwin just creates the VCD out of the .bin.

As in, if using Nero for example, or another burning program that allows higher then 1x burning (trial CDRWin version), would there be a difference between taking a mpeg and burning a VCD...or creating a .bin and .cue and burning those? Would the end result be the same?

I guess I'm just confused on the sematics.

Thanks again for all the help though, much appreciated.

Thanks for the response. That's one of the guides I've been following, but EZCD AND Nero AND NTI all either freeze completely when trying to burn the VCD, say there's not enough room on the disc when there obviously is, or say they've successfully burned the VCD but neither the DVD player nor computer can then read the disc.

I just got it to work correctly (last post before this) using CDRWin (but it is locked at 1x).

When you use Nero to burn your image you click video-cd, mark the standard compliant cd box and either ntsc or pal depending on your source file. Under Iso tab mark ISO level 2 and Iso 9660, and under burn tab be sure to mark finalize cd. Since CdrWin worked Nero should also.

Cdrwin is a great program. If you want to use it support the company and pay the registration fee so they can continue improving their product.

That answers my question perfectly, thanks for the response (and your help in the rest of the thread:)).
