What is and how do you a "low-level" formatting??

I've heard of this once before and heard that it supposedly ensures complete "formatting" of drive to almost "original" state, i.e. like data was never written to it before.

How long does it take to do one? How often (if applicable) should I do it? Thanks in advance.

*I ask this because I've formatted a lot with 98se and ME before. I've had my drives for about almost 2yrs now (see sig below for type).

The Max Blast Disk has a option to write zeros to the drive, Plus Ontrack System Suite 4 has a data wipe disk maker in it. It takes about 7 Hours for a 60GB drive, But i think its worth it. I do it every reformat.

Cool, I have that prog, but is it the same as doing a "true" low-level format? Takes 7 Hours seems like it.
