Hello everybody..
I am currently running a network between two computers using CAT5 cable and a hub. I am using Windows 2000 for both computers and using TCP/IP protocol.
I've gathered all the updated drivers for everything but I still get collisions on the network. Whenever I copy a file from my computer to the other my hub's collision light flashes like mad.
However when a file is being copied to my computer there are no collisions :S. Both cards are set to half duplex and the speed of the network is 10mbps but because of the collisions it goes slower.
One NIC is sharing an IRQ with the AGP and USB, is this cause? I've tried to change the IRQ but failed.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem or any good diagnostic programs I could download and try?

Are you running a hub and switch ? or just a switch?
I think you are saying you have a switch , and you set up is modem to the switch and from the switch to your two computers.
First you need to set your duplex to auto.I think you are seeing a problem that is not there.Collisions on a switch is normal, that why a switch has ram on each port, The port whole's the packet tell the line is clear so unless you have a problem with packet loss you don't have a problem. If you use the switch as a gatway to the enternet yes you will see a lot of collision light flashes , because of the bottle neck at the modem. IF you are using a hub ,there is on ram on the ports and you do have a problem.
The lights on the switch tell you that the ram is being used. that all.Know haveing said that the other thing it could be is the wrong cable to the uplink port or to your computers.you should have a crossover cable to the uplink port and patch cable to each computer

collisions on a hub are normal. Each port broadcasts to every other port. switches only send data to the port it is intended for.
I would definitely set your NICs to auto.
You don't want to play with changing IRQs in W2K unless you really know what you are doing - it really doesn't like it when you do that.
cyberskye: switches only send data to the port it is intended for. This is true but you will still get Collisions if the port can't sent it packet because the line is not clear and the Collisions lights will flash so if you have a bottle neck the light flash. This happen a lot if the switch is between the modem and computer. I know it does on mine when both computers are being used . if the uplink is to a modem.

am using a hub :P
I've checked for Auto option but all I have is Full and Half Duplex only. What is the best Protocol to use on a LAN, NetBeui + TCP/IP?
Anyway, thanks for the help

device manager>network adapter>properties>advanced tab
You don't have 'auto select in the drop down menu under 'media-type'?
Collisions are not usually a problem on a 2 node LAN. What kind of NICs are you using? If you say RealTek you're on your own ;)
ferrarif5 ;Tell us what you are running hub brand name?and modle ? do you have a cable modem?or DSL? 56K?What speed is the hub? 10/100 or just 10T ?
