Yesterday I posted a problem I was having helping a friend set up a small network. He has two puters,, a desktop running win 98 with a lexmark z55 printer attached and a laptop running xp home networked together with a linsys 4 port router/switch. I couldn't get the laptop to print to the networked printer,, Yesterday's Problem (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=88975)

Today I have more problems,,, go figure huh??

Both computers can see each other on the network and can transfer files between. Both computers have access to the internet. I tried to upgrade the latest firmware to the linky and it said unable to access file. This from both computers.

Then I tried to download a file from the internet using the laptop (sony vaio) and it couldn't download it or any other file I tried. The desktop could download files.

I finally got so frustrated I unhooked the laptop from the linksys and plugged directly to the cable modem and tried again to download a file (which was possible before trying to set up network) and it could not download any file from any site I tried!!?? WTF??? Now he is worse off than when I started helping him,,heh heh

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions before I turn his laptop into a expensive frisbee??

Just plain Cornfused!!!

What ISP are they on? Because yesterday I was involved with a global VPN WAN project, with the United States based on Worldcom backbones....and they (worldcom) were having problems with allowing FTP traffic through (something many download sites run on)

Temporary fix to get you through it....download onto your laptop from another source (like your office/home).

Perhaps Linksys was having problems with their site yesterday.
Actually just confirmed that by going to their site as I write this....the downloads are grayed out due to problems.

Hey YeOlde!!! How ya been?

I wish it was that that easy. heh heh

It has to be something else,, possibly a setting in xp home or a problem with his laptop?? I wasn't trying to download the firmware upgrade from linksys,, I already had it. I was trying to download different files from different sites ie..download.com davecentral.com.... besides the desktop could still download files so it has to be something with the laptop.

Although.... I couldn't upgrade the firmware from either the desktop or laptop,, I could download with the desktop. I think the firmware upgrade problem and the download problems are separate..

Thanks

Did you reboot the cable modem to detect the MAC address of the NIC in the laptop? And did you also reset the TCP/IP settings to that of the ISP and not the router?

or try this
reinstall nic card from both with software related while unplug power line from cable modem and router for more than 15 minutes

i hope that can work fine

Well thanks to everyone for your help!!:D :D

I am not sure what exactly happened or what exactly fixed it. heh heh... I frantically tried a mixture of all your suggestions plus a few of my own.

I uninstalled nic from device mgr.
I deleted lAN connection in my network places.
I disabled or uninstalled every protocol, service and client.
I shut down puter.
I turned off cable modem.
I turned off router.

I stirred this mixture gently while adding a few cuss words..;)

Let sit for an hour.... and BAM!!! turned it all back on,, with a prayer and we are working.... Thanks again
