hey i have 3 comps onthis desk. all have to have static so i cant go router. ihave 2 netgears cards and one realtek and a lynsis switch,
whydo soem people use a hubb and a switch???

is it better to have all the same brand cards?

should card brands match switch brand?

is it better to have an 8 port switch as oposed to a 5 port??? i jeard the more ports the better whether you use them or not??

and um im sure i have more questions lol
but i cant htink of them right this second lol
my signal always seems to drop off at certain times late at tnight for no reason at all

HI Atomic Blonde, I have not seen you on here in a long time.
First I don't think you will see any difference in speed with your LAN card base on brand, but like anything you get what you pay for, I have use linksys and netgear LAN card and they both work well. The 3com is though to be the best. I also don't think it matter too much if they all are the same brand or not.
I don't know why someone would use a hub and a switch unless they need the ports and don't want to buy another switch or they had the hub first and then got a switch and just want to use it. A hub does not do a very good job as a gateway to the Internet .
Some ISP use static IP and some don't you must have an ISP that uses static.
I don't know why you think you can't have a router and have more than one ip. I have 3 ip and I run a router. I do remember what you said you use them for and the way I would set it up is, first I would get a nexland pro800 turbo router. It has two WAN ports. So you would have two IP on it. The set up would be from the modem to the uplink on the switch from the switch two-cat5e line to the two wan ports on the router and one cat5e line to a computer. Then from the router to each of your other computer. You would have 3 ips and a very fast network. YOU could even drop one ip and run every thing from behind the router. You can do that with a good router with port forwarding. Just a though!
AS far as 8 ports or 4 ports switch I don't think you will see much difference in speed but what make a good switch is the amount of ram each port may have and speed.A linksys 4 port switch has less than 1mb of ram per port and a netgear has 1 mb of ram per port,so under a big load you could have packet loss with not enough ram.(A hub does not have any ram) the netgear is better.

But they're worth it in my opinion....great quality for decent price!

You could still use a router even if needing static IP's...depending on what you're running.

Years ago hubs were more common....not nearly as expensive as switches. Now-a-days, a switch isn't but a couple of dollars more than a hub...that being the case, in my opinion, there is no reason to buy a hub anymore.
