Hi all,

Long time since i was last here, but i guess you guys are best qualified to help me :)

Im running a simple 2 PC networki via ICS, Crossover and a couple of NIC's, one of the PC's is my sisters so the only time i see it is when its bust...

I was installign office 2k for her today and wanted to check my hotmail whilst doing so, but kept getting Page Not Found Errors, i soon found this happening on all websites... so i tried pinging the host (my machine), which worked okay, then i tried pinging web pages and NONE of em worked - i INSTANTLy got a host not found message, its almost as if its not looking for a host. So far not good, until i accidentaly signed into her MSN... which to my amazment worked - even though NOTHING ewlse can get external access...

This is VERY odd i think you will agree. Ive fiddled about with my IP's and ntheres nothing wrong there - my IE and software settings are hunky dory, ive removed and uninstalled firewall apps to no avail, have tried removing bother her network card and reinstalling TP/IP to no avail... im at my wits end -- any help would be appreciated...

Cheers

(PS the LAN itself works okay and the two machines can see each other - just the client cannot get outside access)

very strange...are you sure there is nothing else blocking the internet access outside? router issue anything??

Nope, theres nothing blocking, i dont use a router and all firewalls have been unisnstalled and totally removed...

Next thing on my list would be to perform a repair reinstall of 2k ...

any other suggestions?

Well, i changed the client to autoassign IP and SUbnet and gave my IP as the gateway - and whada you know... pretty wierd though - cant understand why it stsrted playing up in the first place :(

Sounds like your DNS was hosed. Did you try pinging ip addresses or hostnames? Switching to DHCP would fix the DNS thing (assuming you have a properly configured DHCP server on the network)

MSN might have ip's hard coded rather than FQDN.

I was pinging the web pages via names as i dont know any ip addresses off the top of my head.

Is there any way to configure zone alarm pro to allow the machine using autoasign external access as it requires a fixed IP and subnet i think, and as im auto assigning i cant provide one..
