how to scan ports?

My buddy is getting a cable modem. about 6 months ago , one of you great guys on here( i think it was GRed) help me find out if my system was secure ( thank goodess it was) and I would like to help out some one else, but never did this before......

So how can i find out if he has any ports open???????
