In 'setting up a lan' it says:
You can use a hub only between the PCs, not between the Cable modem and the Server.
Why is that?

I could put only one cable where I needed two, so I decided to put a hub near the modem. Some other PC are also linked to that hub. The other hub is near the server and cables from the hub go to the network cards in my server.
Works just fine. never had any problems!

So I'm missing something here, but what?

I don't know the source that you are quoting, but hubs cannot perform NAT. You obviously have several purchased ip addresses. If you are using proxy software like ICS, you would put two NICs in the server - one would go to the modem and the other to a hub. You would then add clients to the hub, making them invisible to the cable modem.
