But I have no idea where to start. I've played a few games before, but the last ones I played actively were the original Diablo and Star Trek: A Final Unity WAAAAAAAY back in 1995-96.

I'm up for any sort of game, but are there "cream of the crop" titles I should check out in specific genres? I guess I'd like to know what the general concensus of "getting your feet wet" games would be on FPS, role-playing, strategy, etc.

Difficulty or learning curve are no considerations, as I can pick 'em up quickly.

Warcraft 3, the original UT, Aliens Vs Predator 2, Diablo 2 plus expack, and Age of Empires 2 plus expack are some of my favorite multiplayer games.

For single player I highly recommend System Shock 2, Gothic, Morrowind, Fallout 1 + 2, Undying, Age of Wonders 2, Jagged Alliance 2, Civizlization 2, Deus Ex, The Longest Journey, Planescape Torment, Max Payne, and Summoner.

If you want more Diablo 1 style hack and slash I suggest hunting down a copy of Darkstone and Nox.

Some games that are just coming out now that seem promising are The Thing and UT2003.

Many of them can be had for $20 or below now, and even some of the new ones are $30-40 titles.

FPS - Return To Castle Wolfenstein, Medal of Honor, Ghost Recon

RPG - Neverwinter Nights, Warcraft 3 (not true RPG but close and a superb game)

Also try Dungeon Siege.

Not sure what category but GTA3 is my favorite right now.

I picked up about $400 worth of games (some were discounted) over the weekend, including Quake III, Unreal Tournament GOTY Edition, Neverwinter Nights, Diablo II, Black & White, The Sims, Medal of Honor, Civilization III and Warcraft III. Now I just have to find time to play them all.

I forgot Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force and the Myst trilogy...I never got to play Myst when it came out when I got my first PC, a 75 MHz Pentium whopper. Anyone know if they sell the old King's Quest games as a collection?
